Hotel Maria Cristina a Luxury Collection Hotel San Sebastian

Since it opened in 1912 Hotel Maria Cristina a Luxury Collection Hotel has been intimately linked to the history and cultural life of San Sebastian. In the late 19th century the seaside town on the southern point of the Bay of Biscay became a favorite destination for royalty and aristocrats who came to enjoy the sunshine and newly recognized therapeutic properties of sea bathing. A traditional afternoon stroll along the boardwalk offered an opportunity to see and be seen while the many cafes and open air terraces were filled with high society. San Sebastian had passed from being a sleepy fishing village into a thriving cosmopolitan town requiring luxurious, modern facilities to meet the demands of its discerning guests. The majestic design of the hotel by architect Charles Mewes, the man responsible for the Ritz in Madrid and Paris, combined with the propertys enviable river setting and sea views, resulted in it immediately becoming the favored accommodation for international high society.

Rising majestically above the vivacious historic city center of San Sebastian, Hotel Maria Cristina is supremely surrounded by promenades and gardens. This landmark building is situated between the white sand beaches and colorful buildings of La Concha and La Zurriola; our reception desk can provide beach towels. Adjacent to the hotel are the Urumea River and Victoria Eugenia Theatre. Just opposite—on the other side of the river—is the Kursaal Congressional Palace. Three surrounding hills, Mount Urgull, the Castillo de la Mota, and the Mount Igueldo, delineate the city limits. As the capital of Gipuzkoa, San Sebastian is a city where visitors co-exist seamlessly with the approximately 180,000 locals who frequent the citys esteemed restaurants, world-class casino, and Zubieta Race Track. The vast selection of cultural activities includes year-round options San Telmo Museum, Balenciaga Museum and the Aquarium. Annual head-line events are the International Film Festival, Musical Fortnight, and Jazz Festival. The Fantasy and Horror Film Festival and Theatre Festival are exciting options for the adventurous. Gipuzkoa is also a recent discovery of the golf world. The winding Cantabric coast lined with small fishing villages, beaches, cliffs, and rocky coves presents a contrasting landscape perfect for the picturesque sport. As a result of an astonishing 16 Michelin stars bestowed upon San Sebastian restaurants, culinary aficionados congregate here to sample distinctive Basque cuisine. Our Concierge recommends the following as distinct local spots and activities:El Peine de los Vientos: An incomparable stop at the foot of Mount Igeldo.Walking Around: A simple stroll around San Sebastian, referred to as the pearl of the Cantabric Sea, is unforgettable. The Old Quarter: The perfect place for authentic shopping, this area is also home to the best bars, which serve the citys famous Pintxos, small p

Oh my gosh, this has to be one of my favorite hotels ever. Our holiday consisted of Barcelona, San Sebastián and Marrakech. This hotel was the most memorable of our stay. It’s so luxurious and perfectly situated in the heart of the city.

Unfortunately we didn't stay here, but we did eat here twice during our visit. The decor is beautiful, wonderful soft furnishings. The staff were extremely attentive. The food and wine were very nice and very reasonable for such a terrific venue and super location. Would highly recommend lunch or a quite pizza and good wine.

This hotel shines in its elegance. The hotel is very well appointed with artwork galore. From the lobby to the rooms everything is done well. The rooms are large with high ceilings and some rooms have small balconies. The bathrooms are equally as large with a separate tub and shower. I found the service to be exquisite. If given the option between points and breakfast go for the opulent breakfast featuring customized omelets and muliple other stations.

We loved the hotel, from the impressive public spaces to the elegantly decorated and spacious rooms.

The staff were attentive and willing to please.

The view from our room was the cherry on the cake.

I have no doubt I will want to stay here again, should I come back to San Sebastián!

Fabulous hotel and great quality of service. We flagged we were on honeymoon and got offered a bottle of bubbly - still got the “Mr & Mrs” on welcome letter though. We also enjoyed stunning cocktails (Lost In Translation is a must have - per picture) at the bar

Arrived and there was a problem with my room, so as a good will gesture I was offered the Betty Davies suite, all to myself. The hotel itself is very grand, and the staff that run the hotel are absolutely excellent, warm and friendly, and I advise anyone who stays to make a friend of the staff, as a little local knowledge can go along way, and new friends are always welcome.

This hotel might have been the most amazing hotel we have ever stayed at. I cant even begin to describe all of the amazing things that were part of this experience. One word of caution if they help you make reservations some restaurants in the area (Michelin Stars) may charge you if you have to cancel the reservation.

If 6 stars were possible, I would give them! What a beautiful hotel and what an amazing service from start to finish! From the moment we arrived in our car, tired from a long trip, everything run so smoothly. Personnel was so friendly and all went the extra mile. The hotelroom was bigger than my first apartment and so clean and all kinds of extra amenities. Dinner in the Asian restaurant was delicious and breakfast more than you could wish for! This hotel knows what 'service' is. An absolute 6-star hotel!

Hotel Maria Cristina is an amazing place to hqve some drinks. The attention the waiters give you is as great as it corresponds to the 5 star hotel the bar is in. The price, of course is quite high, but it's worth it for the delicious drinks and the quality of service given.

9

The only 5-star hotel in San Sebastian, it was originally the home of Queen Maria Cristina (1882-1902). It retains bullet damage from the 1932 civil war, and has one wing that became private residences when the owners had to raise money during a financial crisis. It has the Michelin Star restaurant Helene Darroze where food and wine will cost €150 and up per person.

A fine mix between Faulty towers and what I would guess is luxury by Donald Trumph. Only been in the bar, twice. They do their best to appear upper class, but seem a bit to clumsy to play out the act. Don't misunderstand. It is an extremely kind, warm and accessible posh bar for normal folks. I highly recommend it, but it also puts a smile on your face because of the above. Ordered a GT based on Monkey 47. The waiter poured 20% of the bootle in my glass, so even with the price off €17 it was good value

Love, love, love this hotel. Concierge (Rodrigo) was excellent to work with whether it be restaurant reservations (and we had many changes), surf lessons, booking car services and/or general information. The rooms are spacious with huge beds, nice bathrooms and nice amenities. The location is fantastic--close to the beach, close to Old San Sebastian and close to shopping. Highly recommend.

This place is so lovely. The lobby is gorgeous. The room was very spacious. Loved the bathroom, which had a shower and bath, as well as multiple finishing touches which made you feel like you were getting 5 star treatment. The bed was very comfortable. We had a great view of the courtyard and city. It was rainy when we were in San Sebastian, so we spent a great amount of time in the room but with absolutely no complaints!read less
