I knew this place was not gonna be super fancy but boy you come in and the rooms are nothing like the pictures they post. They only have a couple of rooms like that but in general its very old and smells wet. Moldy shower curtains and cracked walls. Some reviewers mentioned dungeon and to be honest on some levels it does look like an old asylum or dungeon. The only good thing about this place is the location and I can tell u that Maria B. (one of the receptionist) is the most helpful person in this place and she helped us a lot to make us feel more comfortable. Staying here this time? I had to. Next time? I don't think so.

This is an old hotel but at an amazing location! All of the staff that I spoke to were sweet and helpful. I was able to pay cash for my stay other than my security deposit, which was $100 for one night. The rooms are old but they have recently been updated a little from the last time I stayed there. They no longer have the old, ugly comforters that some hotels still have and were replaced with clean white sheets. The room was large and decently priced because of the location we had. You could tell they had just vacuumed, which was nice! We ended up self-parking in a garage nearby but valet was available as well (Icon Parking). If you self-park, make sure to get your ticket stamped at the front desk for the discount to park there. The parking garage has people park your car for you and then they bring it up to you when you turn in your ticket and pay (which is really nice). For long-term stays, I would recommend staying elsewhere but if you're just needing a place to sleep, I definitely recommend it!

I don’t know why the other reviews were so negative. This hotel was great. Our room was nice and clean, the location is great and I love the lobby area. The staff were kind and accommodating and even moved us to a better room when we needed an extra bed for another guest. They didn’t charge us for the room upgrade and the room had a great view. I’d come here again.

Best part of the hotel is location, next to PENN station. We waited around 2 hours to check-in, believe me it was very frustrating. Around 1700 rooms and only 3 counters were open to attend the customers. We booked PENN 5000 series room which supposed to be remodeled but in my impression room was remodeled decades back. It was comfortable stay for us because we spent few hours in room, mostly we were outside for sightseeing and early morning we had to catch the tour bus. If you get any other hotel which is 20-30% more than this then doesn’t choose hotel Pennsylvania.

Hotel Penn is one of the very few cheapest hotels in midtown Manhattan. The quality of breakfast is poor. You get juice, lukewarm coffee and a very sweet pastry. The line is long for breakfast. Third world countries provide excellent breakfast but Penn does not care about good service because of their low cost and location. Room is cleaned daily.
You are close to subway; bed was comfortable. Bathroom is cleaned daily. You get a TV no microwave. The door is built like a dungeon to hell which gave us the creeps.

We needed a hotel in the center of the city and since we rode in on The Amtrak Pennsylvanian, it seemed only reasonable to stay across the street. We found it to be a good value, $1000 for the whole week. Wait lines to check/checkout are long as was the line for the continental breakfast. The breakfast was adequate. The most important thing was location. We were visiting colleges for our daughter and it was an easy train ride to all of them. We will stay again in April.

5 STARS!!! Don't judge a hotel by its low rating! This place is great! Awesome building, perfect location (across from MSG, are you kidding me), friendly staff, crazy huge lobby and rooms, super accommodating, clean bathrooms, quiet nights somehow, and upon a wonderful night of relaxing sleep in the exact heart of the greatest city on earth, you will be well rested, have more money in your pocket, and able to get anywhere you desire within a few steps out the front door. Come on people! Hotel Penn for win!!!

My elderly, disabled mother went downstairs to have a cigarette. She had our room key, but nothing else. She knew what floor we were on, but had forgotten the room number. EVERYTHING was in her name. The desk wouldn't even let her call my cell to come get her or bring her ID. They wouldn't tell her what room it was (understandable with no ID) BUT all they had to do was ask her ANYTHING about our 4 night stay. Anything. It was ALL in her name. SS# address, phone number... Credit card used. IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN HARD. The manager wouldn't even help her. He acted like he didn't know what a hotel house phone was. Please. The rooms are slightly larger than a walk in closet. The bathroom has two EXTREMELY weak lights. Not even enough lighting for makeup application. There was ONE person behind the desk that tremendous my mother about the time my son and I went down to find her, he gave her the room number after almost an hour. She thought we might have gone to sleep. She was scared and had a panic attack. When I found her she was shaking and crying. This is not a woman with dementia. We had to change rooms for our last night, and she simply forgot the room number. I'm furious. It also took an hour to get a Blanket and extra pillow to our room at 2 am. I will NEVER stay here again.

Hey all I can say is does magical give you a description? Well it is beyond magical its majestic. It's a place you want to go be pampered from the time you enter until you complete your wonderful visit. Whether you are from out of town or a native New Yorker you can appreciate the level of service you expect from a high end hotel. The staff are polite and will help you find tourist attractions or whatever you need to know about the surroundings. They are excellent sources of information. So feel free to visit this hotel and receive and embrace all of the excellence you can expect plus a few possible options you didn't expect. I would visit this hotel again.

It was clean enough and can't fault it for location! The breakfast is included but there's a weird ticket system and you need to allow time to get it, don't be in a rush cos it won't happen! Allow loads of time for check in & purchase luggage storage tags when you check in if you need to store your bags between check out & actually leaving the hotel. The tickets are $5 a bag so budget for that. Staff all really nice tho and unless we win the lottery and could upgrade we'd go back. For a central New York hotel it was good value

Has classic charm. The price is great and the staff are very kind. The hotel IS DATED so don't expect shiny new. Some floors are updated, some are not. The hotel has been around for a long time, if you are looking for a vintage vibe at a good price I had a lot of fun staying here. The location is great.

Smaller than expected, but the bed was comfortable. Nice room very good price for the distance from my event venue. I was able to do everything I needed in the city. It was walking distance from Times Square. Most of the other hotels around this one were $80 more a night. I was very happy with my choice.

I stayed at this hotel for a short weekend trip to NYC. The location is great, at least more than 2 train stations near my hotel. It's also walkable distance to Korean town and time square which many shops are around. The customer service is semi ok, the staffs seeming overwhelmed and start shouting each other in front of the customers. The luggage storage guy had a great customer service, no matter how tired he was but he smiled and greeted customer. Great customer service from luggage storage person. Thank you for always smiling!!

I’ve stayed at this hotel twice for an accumulative amount of 7 days and loved every stay. This is an historic hotel directly across from the MSG. The rooms aren’t the ritziest you can find but full of history that you can feel, especially in the long hallways and elevators. It’s in the perfect location within walking distance of every single convenience you could ever need, plus the perfect NYC feel! The people I’ve encountered at this hotel and in manhattan in general have always been very helpful and always nice. Thanks for the enjoyable experience...

The location is perfect, it's cheap, and the staff is so nice! I checked my room thoroughly and THERE WERE NO BED BUGS! They had zipper covers on the mattress and box spring and everything was clean. The paint is old and the carpet is thin. It's small. No luxury here, but there is a cash/credit business center and if their printer doesn't work right just go to the manager. They'll print it out for you no problem.

I guess if you just need to lay your head down and you don't have much money. Although they do charge a lot independently of the Middleman sites. I don't know why they're charging so much though I actually was looking forward to checking out once I checked in. If you don't mind about your staying conditions then you can book if you do then I would say think twice very very old Hotel bathroom reflects the oldness and needs revamping so does the room the corridors etc. If you can ask for the renovated rooms which apparently is in a different section of the hotel try and spend extra money. Oh yeah and be very careful thief's operate in the hotel. In the reception bit they walk around pretending but they're actually observe in to see who is not vigilant with the purse and luggage.

Book this hotel for what it is. It's a piece of history that is cheap and in one of the best locatinos in the city. If you want to see some of the coolest elements, stop by Floor 12 and you can see where they preserved some of the hotel's rich history. I am a history geek so, I loved that stuff. If you want a convenient place to sleep at a low rate, book Hotel Penn. If you want modern amenities, open up the wallet and go somewhere else.

My husband and I stayed recently for two nights. We were return customers. We love the location of the hotel and have no objection to the little slice of "Old New York" experienced at Penn. Our room was small but clean, amenities were adequate. Check- in was quick and easy for us and the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful. If you want modern luxury book elsewhere; if you enjoy the flavor of an older, authentic property visit Hotel Penn!

Though the hotel is really old, the price is reasonable and the location is very accesible to a lot of tourist spots in New York. They also offer a free breakfast (a choice of pastry, fresh orange juice, coffee or tea). The room we got may not be too large, but is enough for our family of three. We had a queen size bed, 1 bathroom with shower, 1 side table with lampshade, a television (that has a weird channel listing, video hanging and sometime turning off and on by itself) and a small cabinet/closet with enough hangers good for wardrobes of 3 people for 2 days. Also inside the closet is a hair dryer and a small plastic container. The bathroom has basic toiletries like bath towels, hand towels, 2 shampoos, toilet paper and facial tissue. It would've been better if there was a conditioner and disposable slippers. Overall, our stay (3 days, 2 nights) is good as we were able to get a good sleep which is most important since most of the time, we were out of the hotel exploring.

The room was absolutely huge and relatively expensive. But that was just because they didn't clean to other the rooms and we got upgraded. I really really cool I don't like how heavy very heavy the atmosphere is. mean the lobbies great it's a very historic building and its even before they had like ventilation shaft but I mean the decor could use a little update and maybe the female Ghostbusters could stop by and like get rid of the creepy feeling shining ghost

What can you expect from a $100/night midtown hotel? The bad: The room was absolutely filthy. Every surface was covered in dust and dirt. The walls and ceiling we're covered in scuff marks, cracks, and paint chips. The bathroom fixtures we're old and rusty. The room smelled damp and smoky. The check in process was slow and we checked in at noon. (The check in line in the evening was nearly out of the door.) The good: literally smack in the middle of midtown Manhattan. So close to trains and so easy to get around. The view from our room looked over Madison square garden and was pretty decent. Checkout was extremely easy. Overall: you get what you pay for. This was a step above a roach motel, and many steps below all other hotels near it. I'll look for another option next time.

For the money you pay to stay it is an outstanding location and value. Hotel needs little updates but looking awesome. Good place to stay if you are not considering your self princess and want be pampered for little money in New York city. If you are not rude to service staff they would treat you with respect. I read some reviews... Negative reviews tells not about hotel, it tells more about spoiled visitors 😁.

Very busy location, but overall a great experience for the price, and especially for the location. Rooms are older, but clean and spacious. Bathroom can be small, but is also clean. No complaints! Definitely an excellent value if you're looking to travel to the heart of NYC on a budget.

If you go on a weekend when many people are in the city in hotels, you'll pay more. If you go when occupancy is less, you'll pay less. It's an older hotel. For what it is, it is very nice. You will see a sort of cabinet, in the doors, which formerly allowed one to put coats/clothing in, so they would be washed. Hey, if you want to spend $2k/night on a hotel, go do that. That's not what this place is for. I enjoy visiting it, their staff are nice, and for what it is- a 1919 hotel still in operation- it is 5 stars, or has been for my family.

Firstly, if anyone looking into staying at this hotel expects to have a five star room for the price they've given, you are already kidding yourself. You get what you pay for. On a second note, I LOVED THIS HOTEL AND MY ROOM!!!! From the second we went to check in, Ann at the front desk made us feel welcome and truly appreciated to be at this hotel. She made our experience begin wonderfully and it just kept getting better from there. The room was very comfortable (and I think quite adorable) and we got an incredible view of the Empire State Building. I loved this hotel and I WILL be staying here again on my trips to the city. For the price, the atmosphere, and most importantly Ann who made our stay beyond anything we expected. Thank you Ann!

Friendly staff, people are very accommodating. We stayed here for 8 nights. The first day we arrived, all king size bedrooms were booked so they allow us to another room for a night and got our permanent room the second night. Fast key checkout! Pros: right in front of madison square garden! middle of downtown.

We spent 3 days in N.Y. and what a place. When we got to the room it was old, and charming. You could see how well things were built. The bathroom was tile floors and cast iron tub and wonderful water pressure and hot water. I slept the best I ever had in a hotel and if I come back to the City this is the place. Across street from Madison square gardens and Macy's next door. Close to Empire State Building and Times square. The people are really nice and it was a joy

Excellent location. Got a beautiful view. It's an old historical hotel so the room decor and layout is charming. My double room was super HUGE!!! It was clean and smelled good. Don't expect a modern feel if that is what you are looking for.

Friendly and helpful receptionist ever, so lovely and great first impression of hotel. Couldn't have been more sweet, giving me directions to a function I was attending along with a helpful map, ensuring parking in car park and facilitating an early check in. If nothing else had gone right with hotel this lady ensured I would have left with a good impression. Fortunately everything about the hotel was exceptional, and I don't give praise lightly. It was clean, stylish, roomy with excellent service in both bar where we had lunch and restaurant where we had dinner. Food was beyond good and great value for money and service in both places attentive and efficient. Room itself was well equipped and comfortable. I could go on but suffice it to say I was very pleased with my stay, and although short and sweet this time, I hope to be back for a longer visit in the future.

This hotel is very basic. However a great stop of you are passing by new york. I have stayed here a few times. The area is not the greatest but the hotel is well situated for ease of getting around. Pennsy Food hall is directly opposite and it has great craft beers and food. A pleasant and enjoyable stay. Don't expect anything fancy it's really just a place to sleep.

The location was amazing and the service was very friendly. There was a small cafe/shop in the lobby to get coffee/quick bites. I really enjoyed being here and to return here after exploring Manhattan. I'd really recommend this hotel. The room was okay. It was comfortable, but really outdated. If they would remodel the rooms a bit with some new furniture and paint, this hotel would be excellent and receive the maximum rating.

For a decently priced hotel in Manhattan it is great. Anywhere else it should get less stars. The rooms are inconsistent in size and niceness. The room we stayed in seemed like it was updated in the 70s the bathroom reminded me of a dormitory bathroom, though clean, seemed to look dirty and well used. There was a cable snaked under the carpet that seemed to go from the TV into other rooms.

Room size seemed to vary as well. Our room was massive for a hotel room in Manhattan but our friends had ones that where considerably smaller and more typical of the NY hotel experience.

The hallways where like something out of American horror story or any other horror with long ward like corridors.

All in all if I need a cheap place to stay in NY I would probably come back here. But if I am booking several months and can get discounts elsewhere I would do that first.

Great for the price! Check in was abysmally slow, but other than that service was good. Beds were comfortable but a bit squeaky. Bathroom was very basic and the tub had no drain stopper and was peeling. But it served my purpose well. All I wanted was an inexpensive and clean place to sleep and I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel.

This place is fantastic. Staff is friendly/ helpful and breakfast is a big plus!! The price is okay for New York City. My only concern was the news in the elevator. It seems to be for a targeted audience and an elevated is no place for bias political news.. stay to elevator music. So awkward...

Ideally placed for NY attractions and directly across from Penn Station, so convenient to find after long journey from England. Room was a bit shabby, crack in sink but clean, and the shower was great. Reception staff appeared not to be very affable. The staff at the safe deposit area were very helpful and friendly. As were the shop/cafe staff. All in all a good experience and would probebly stay there again on future visits. Would recommend to friends as a central base.

This is very centrally located. Bang Opposite Penn station and Madison square garden. The lobby is lively 24 by 7 . Nothing else apart from that worthwhile. Has seen better days and there is steady renovations happening all the time. Staff retention is good. Christine at front desk is one that I remember has been around for long and it's a pleasure dealing with her always
