Monaco Portland, a Kimpton Hotel

To experience the true essence of Portland a city with plenty of personality there is no better anchor than Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland in all its fascinatingly eccentric glory. From the moment you walk in the doors of our circa 1912 building you will feel at home among the eco and chic digs peppered with eclectic furnishings. We are consistently ranked in the downtown top three Portland hotels on TripAdvisor and for good reason our cozy salon style lobby and the citys best hosted wine hour are the stuff memorable hotel stays are made of. When it comes to Portland hotels Monaco stands head and toes above the rest.

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland is located at the corner of 5th Avenue and Washington - just 5 blocks from the waterfront and in the heart of downtown Portland shopping dining entertainment and business district. Portland International Airport -PDX- is located 14 miles NE.

Green Key Eco-Rating Program 4

With more than 1,200 hotels certified in Canada since its inception in the 1990s, the Green Key Eco-Rating Program awards hotels an environmental rating of one to five Green Keys. Green Key members are then given guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts - and in turn earn more keys.

The Green Key audit looks at nine major areas of sustainable hotel operations:
• Energy conservation
• Water conservation
• Solid waste management
• Hazardous waste management
• Indoor air quality
• Community outreach
• Building infrastructure

Love this hotel. The decor is imaginative, colourful and over-blown and a bit wonderful. They definitely put a bird on it: on the wallpaper, the pictures, and ducks feet on the lamps. Friendly helpful staff. Piano music and wine in the evenings. It's a great location too. BUT watch out for the hidden fees when you book. After you've left you might get a nasty surprise. Apparently this is a common practice in the US. There was no warning when I checked in and when I checked out they said there was nothing else to pay. A few days later, $26 per night was deducted. Not at all transparent. Added in response to hotel's reply: Yes I called the hotel and they said this was normal practice. I think they called it an amenity fee. But it's not something optional, and it isn't something I was told about at any point during my stay, it was charged to my card a few days after I'd left. It seemed... a bit of a cheeky trick.

I have stayed in Kimpton Monaco hotels since the early 1990s starting in San Francisco. They were cutting edge lodgings in the twentieth century. My loyalty continues in the 21st century as the rooms have been updated in all the Monaco’s across the country, except possibly here in Portland. Our suite, which we paid handsomely for, was changed to a different room once the front desk discovered we were older and had a small dog. I was dismayed immediately on entering this so called suite. It had not been renovated since the hotel was built. I expected to see Ronald Reagan on the television set. The room smelled musty and the bathroom was tiny and uncomfortable. The tub had a hard time draining. My conjecture is this room is rarely assigned. The Kimpton organization should be ashamed. They proclaim themselves to be dog friendly. That is a misnomer if people with dogs are assigned the worst rooms at the highest rates. My guess, is some ageism was going on, as the two guys with their baseball hats turned backwards, behind me in line, were treated in a much warmer manner than me. Yet, that’s not the Monaco’s fault. It’s the way America treats people who are over 70.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The check-in process was quick and the staff was very welcoming. They have an extensive coffee bar in the morning and have a live music and drinks every night. My room was clean, bed was comfortable, and the location is excellent. Can’t wait to come back!

Stayed here while some work was being done on my home. It was a pet friendly hotel and the rooms were a good size. A little after I arrived someone knocked on my door and offered me a complimentary bottle of wine. It was a very nice gift. The bed was glorious and super comfortable. I absolutely loved how the hotel was decorated. What made my stay though was how welcoming and friendly the staff was.

A great stay. We came for our anniversary and the hotel gave us a great welcome gift. The room was spacious and excellent. The decor was completely Portland. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the evening happy hour as well as the coffee and hot chocolate station in the morning. I would definitely return.

Excellent. The bed was a little on the side of too soft but the room was large and very appointed with super high ceilings so it felt very airy. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. They gave us several recommendations for dinner locations and none disappointed. They have free coffee in the morning. A free happy hour with local entertainers. And the "night cap" was also a nice perk.

This hotel was lovely but expensive. The location is excellent - it’s within easy walking distance of many fun things to do. I’d love to stay again but the price would probably prevent me from doing so. I liked the decor and the evening wine hour.

Great location that puts one in walking distance to lots of great areas and establishments. Well appointed everything. The evening drinks and a night cap are also nice. Staff are all super helpful and friendly. Have stayed here several times nevi disappointed.

Nice friendly staff greeted us right away, helped us find fun eateries downtown (they do have restaurant but my kids wanted food truck experiences). The room was super swanky, with super fun wallpaper. Very trendy furnishings also. Gave us a night cap, and the red star bar had very interesting mixology. Well worth the visit to it. Totally recommend.

Beautiful hotel, awesome atmosphere and friendly staff. We had to wait a bit after 3 to check in because it was a full turn over that day but the lobby waiting area has plenty of seating and refreshments or there is a bar with happy hour too. Being an animal lover I enjoyed that the hotel has the option to bring your pet and hypoallergenic floors for people who need it.

The Kimpton Monaco was a great experience for my wife and I! It's in a great location in the heart of the city. There are tons of of great places to visit within walking distance. The service and amenities are top notch. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the beautiful city of Portland!

Love love love this hotel!!! Amazing staff that offered us wine even though we had just missed the nightly happy hour (when checking in), delicious and fast room service from the red star tavern, clean rooms and centrally located - very easy to walk many places. Also loved the wine tasting offered by David from Patton Valley...love wine but we didn’t have time to do a vineyard tour and this was the next best thing. Had no idea they produced a special “Rene” wine just for this hotel, which is fabulous :) Would hands down choose this hotel if/when we return to Portland. Missing it as I write this review!!!

I've had an absolutely wonderful experience at the hotel so far. The accommodations far exceed what I believed they were going to be. The location gives you the ability to be at the waterfront very shortly and is in close proximity to a high quantity of quality restaurants. If you stay here you will not be disappointed.

Signature Kimpton service and unique ambiance of this specific hotel is greatly appreciated. Located near shopping, river and abundant restaurants and food trucks. The decor and architecture sets this property apart from the mundane, especially in the lobby and parlor, which draws more guests than anywhere else we've stayed. Kudos and thanks to the excellent staff.

Such a cool hotel!! Come for their location and price, stay for their incredible in house restaurant, eclectic rooms, and complimentary cocktail hour, all of which is pet friendly. Don't park here though, there are better options!

It's a classic Kimpton. Boutique luxury. They had an inviting lobby with free coffee in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon. Clean rooms and always friendly staff is what they are known for and they didn't disappoint. Location was excellent as walking anywhere in downtown is easy.

This is our favorite place to stay in Portland. If you have kids it's an excellent option. They have games in the lobby by the huge fireplace. The rooms are perfectly spacious and the staff are super warm and welcoming. They offer great free add-ons for kids too, just ask.

This hotel has been recently remodeled / updated. Looks much better now. I like that some of the higher-priced rooms have their own unique Flair. They have happy hour occasionally with live music, and it's a fun time down in the lobby. It's also centrally located.

I haven't stayed at IHG hotel for awhile, I'm glad I did. This cute boutique hotel had amazing customer service. The staff there are very attentive where every guest had a smile. This is a pet friendly hotel which made my 1 year old happy with all the pets around. Pets are greeted with water and a treat! They have happy hour from 5-6pm with wine, beer, snackss, and a live music. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco is one of my favorite hotels.

Fantastic hotel with very comfortable rooms. Lounge area is a great place to spend an hour before heading out on the town. Offerings include free local wines and beers and lots of games like Jenga for the kids to enjoy. Might even be a dog or two laying about chillin in this great atmosphere. The rooms are cool but what really makes them special is they put a bird on the decorations.

A really lovely hotel, true to the Kimpton spirit, with lots of great Portland details. Very nice cocktail hour with beer, wine, signature cocktail and non-alcoholic choices as well. Live piano performances too. The king suite is laid out nicely and the blend of funky woodsy-feeling patterns throughout reminds you where you are. We will definitely come back!

Spent five days here for a conference. The facilities are spectacular. Red Star Tavern did the catering (on the first floor) and it was amazing! Would highly recommend eating here. Loved that the hotel was dog friendly and would stay here in the future if I was back in Portland.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The room was huge with a very large bathroom, a separate seating area and two TVs. The decor in the room and the lobby was stylish whimsical and fun! Every person we came in contact who worked at the hotel was genuinely friendly and warm. Oh, did I mention it's pet friendly too? We can't wait to return to the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland for a longer stay and this time with our pups!!

Nice rooms, a beautiful lobby and an excellent location downtown. Right near great food trucks, voodoo donuts and the Saturday market. The toiletries were better than I'm used to in a hotel. There was also a lot going on. While I was there there were lammas in the lobby one day and santa visited. Highly recommend!

The service from the valet to the front desk was awesome. We booked a king suite and they bumped us to a king premiere suite. So great. The room was super clean. The theme of the room was pretty bad. The place was soo busy. There is a bird pattern on the walls in every room which did not go with the furniture. Each piece of furniture was a different pattern and color. I started to get nausea.

Great boutique hotel in downtown PDX. Stayed here for one night with a friend and had not stayed at this Kimpton hotel before. The hotel allows pets and goes out of their way to make them feel special, including a welcome sign with their name. Was surprised when I saw a guest there with their pet pig, but then remembered it's Portland and quirky is what makes it special. The "social" hour in the lobby is nice as well.

The Hotel Monaco Portland was great from the moment we booked through the moment we walked out to grab our train to the airport. The customer service was great, the staff were warm, welcoming and friendly. The perks -- free Wi-Fi when you sign up for Karma Rewards, drink/snack rewards for every day you choose to not have housekeeping stop by -- alone were nice, the location is ideal (steps from everything you could want), and the rooms were spacious and quiet, clean and comfortable. I highly recommend the Hotel Monaco Portland.

Funky and eclectic design aesthetic coupled with great customer service. The suites are clean and roomy, without being overstuffed or tacky. Central location and easy valet service make this a great hotel destination for the visiting folk. Also recommend Red Tavern restaurant that is connected to the hotel. The food is pretty good. There are a few issues with the “late night menu” in that you may have to call a few times before you get through to someone who knows what is on the menu for that night. Mini-bar was stocked with locally sourced snacks which was a nice touch as well. Will definitely recommend this hotel for a getaway with a loved one .

Their VIP parking is a small underground lot that appears to be very secure. Service at check in was extremely courteous and we were about to be upgraded to a king room until she saw we had a dog. Their king is on the hypoallergenic floor, so that's understandable. The room was still big, ceilings looked about 11-12 ft tall. The toiletries provided smelled amazing. Oolong tea shampoo and some kind of citrus sandalwood amazing-ness. Not only are they dog-friendly, they provided complimentary dog bowls, dog bed, and poop bags. Their restaurant was amazing, though eating in the last few hours apparently meant our server's service quality would fade as she began chatting with some friends (possibly coworkers) that came in. Overall, an amazing hotel.

The staff at this hotel are amazing! When we arrived, they could not find our reservation. They asked us to have a drink at the bar, on them while they figured it out. Then they comped our parking! Non of this was necessary, but much appreciated. We were in rib 904, which was a premium king room. Unfortunately, I'm a lite sleeper, and the bed was just soft enough that every move my husband made woke me up. They were kind enough to such is to aw queen room for our remaining nights, and have is a complementary bottle of wine. They really go above and beyond to make sure the customer is happy!

What a fantastic place to stay. In the heart of Portland, historic, and beautiful. We stayed in the Corner King suite, a hip room with a great view. Kimpton's are great hotels, this was no exception. The room we stayed in had a seating area and the beds could be sectioned of with sliding doors. This added some privacy. The staff was great. The restaurant downstairs had a pretty good happy hour. It's fairly centrally located, so easy to get around Portland (most trips less than 10 min). Parking is a challenge anywhere downtown. They do offer overnight valet (in/out) for about $40/day. If you've rented a car you might not be able to avoid it.

The hotel wasn't as fancy or luxurious as I thought I would be for the price. Plus, parking isn't included and is pretty expensive even for downtown Portland. The room itself was clean. One of these pillows has blood on it that was washed but still the mark was there. I just used the extra pillow in the closet instead. The honking outside the hotel in morning was pretty annoying as well. I felt like the hotel was mediocre. There were parts to it where I felt it was really nice but not as nice as what the pricing suggests.

Had a great stay. A lot of nice amenities (several very unique to this hotel) and very friendly staff. Location in downtown Portland is super. The parking across the street is aboit half the price as the one on the same block, but parking is always a pain in downtown. Room was huge and comfortable. Wish the windows opened and the recycling trucks were loud as hell at three in the morning, but you can't win 'em all I guess. I'd highly recommend a stay here overall though.

Not your typical Hotel. This was thoughtfully decorated and the bed was really comfortable. Personality was evident throughout. And though it is a dog welcoming hotel, and we didn't have our dog, it still didn't seem to define the whole location. I'm really sensitive to the smell of dogs and I have to say this one passed the test of not smelling like a wet dog. The gathering space downstairs was really beautiful. You do have to pay to park, which is not cheap, but that seems to be part of staying in downtown Portland. Convenient location, but beware there are quite a few homeless communities very close by, as near as the corner across the street.

We can't wait to come back to Monaco in Portland. =) This is our new vacation condo for Portland... Or at least that's our unofficial condo location. They are such an easy walk to everything around downtown (food, coffee, shopping, pioneer courthouse, Powell's book store, etc). They are dog friendly and have a special welcome sign for the dogs. The staff was very friendly, the entire hotel was very clean and the live free music in the lobby was perfect.

We travel to Portland a couple of times a year but this was our first stay at this hotel. We arrived in the pouring rain (it's Portland after all) and were greeted by a friendly staff. The check-in process was simple and the staff was "dog sitting" for a fellow guest. quite charming. The hotel, though a bit dated in some ways, was well-appointed with lots of outlets for phone, computer charging, etc. The room was not over-crowded but had a comfy little sectional sofa that was much appreciated. The robes were roomy and tasteful and the complimentary umbrellas were most appreciated.

I attended a training seminar at Hotel Monaco & was comfortable throughout the 8 hrs spent there. Comfortable seating, consistent temperature, delicious catered lunch & friendly staff. I do wish the lighting had been better. Nice location with plenty of close by parking options. Teeny lobby; if they're having a social hour, there is no place to sit & relax, make calls or meet someone.

Missed the train to Seattle and hotwire put us here... Dang I'm glad I missed the train! What a fantastic boutique hotel! This boutique hotels super cute. Signed up for karma rewards and got a free room upgrade and s'mores kit for saying "feeling toasty". Room was spacious and a lovely king bed. Could use better pillows though. All of ours were either lumpy or really hard. Social happy hour is a plus. Free beer and wine from 5-6. Got some delicious Porter on the house from Kimpton. Only true negative is overnight parking is expensive at $41 a night. We drove up from San Diego for a 3 night stay. That's $123 just on parking unfortunately. Wish that fee could have been waived for us. Otherwise, I'd come back if I didn't have a car.

I was just there to see a friend who was staying. Very Wes Anderson decor, it was awesome. The room he had was fantastic. He was upgraded to a suite. It had two TVs, with a sliding wall divider. The Hotel Monaco was a very enjoyable experience. The lobby area was exquisite, and was the first time I've actually wanted to spend time in a hotel lobby. Rooms were beautiful with high ceilings, clean and comfy beds. Location was amazing with much of downtown Portland within a walks reach. Hotel staff was always friendly, especially the man tending the front door (didn't catch his name but always greeted with a smile.) Will absolutely visit again!

Clean, quaint and quiet hotel in a great location. Friendly staff, and they offer some free drinks from 5 to 6pm. I've stayed here twice and been very happy both times. I will definitely choose this hotel again.

I'm loving my stay here. The front desk staff has been both helpful and friendly. The hotel has a quirky vibe that I am in love with (I have birds on my wallpaper!). Ever important, the rooms feel CLEAN.

Stayed here a few years back, was a truly magical spot. We enjoyed the happy hour and painting combination in the Main Lobby Area, quite a great way to mix with people from all over exploring the beautiful city of Portland! Great people, great location, incredible staff and beautiful rooms!

Awesome hotel! Great rooms, fun design, perfect, central location for getting adoind and seeing Portland. They have nice amenities like free bikes, a delicious coffee bar in the morning and ice tea in the afternoon. I'd highly recommend staying here.

One of the best Decors of all the hotels I have been to. Rooms have been decorated uniquely and tastefully. Sitting lounge decor in front of reception desk is a site to behold. Liberal use of colors in the decor could have easily gone wrong but in case of Hotel Monaco it's brilliant. Hotel parking is expensive at $41 a day. More reasonable parking available at Avis Parking Garage on Alder and SW Washington ave. which is at a walking distance from hotel. Food items and beverages in the room are insanely expensive.

I would have given one star if not for the fact that the hotel is decorated nicely and conveninetly located, however the staff was discourteous and unhelpful. Upon check-in, I was given a room on the third floor, a seemingly nice room. It wasn't until 3am, I found that the room was on an alleyway where trash pickup occurred for an hour!! The front desk was extremely rude when I called to asked to move rooms (a lot of attitude from the employee). Will never stay here again. It's a shame because it is a physically beautiful hotel.

If any of you guys are looking for dirt cheap hotel deals I would check out HotelRaven. Com I saved a ton of money using that site. The staff, to include front desk, bellmen, valets, housekeepers, happy hour servers and anyone else I may be remiss in omitting were FABULOUS. I mean it. Tippy-top notch folks who all went out of their way to provide an exceptional experience for guests. The hotel itself was decorated in an interesting, eccelectic way that was a mix between a 1940s cocktail lounge, a dollhouse, and an acid trip. After two nights I was tired of looking at the wallpaper that featured ducks that, rather than flying, appeared to be falling from the sky after being shot. Maybe it was my imagination, maybe it was whatever they put in the happy hour sangria. Either way, I totally enjoyed my stay, but may have preferred the decor to be easier on the eyes/less seizure inducing. The generosity and graciousness that imbued so much of the experience was to the way in which guests are nickeled and dimed for things that even the unhip chain hotels give away gratis: Internet, toothbrush/toothpaste... It was almost embarrassing to have the little basket of goods on the table with a price list: Oreos! Only five dollars for a package of four! The "intimacy kit" which likely included a condom, lube, some sort of magical sex powder or another, and a feather tickler that probably just made a mess of things sexily sported its price of $15.00. The bottle of water strategically placed at the bedside for when the intimacy kit threatens to burn the bed up had a $5.00 sticker on its lid. "Whoa babe, I mean, you're totally on fire, but could you maybe just get a drink from the tap?" And the cute teddy bear on the bed? The paper tag on his ear says 35 bucks, and the tag looks well worn, like hundreds of strangers faces have hugged it, maybe even after using the intimacy kit.

If you ate and drank everything in the basket and the mini bar, which is dangerously possible now that marijuana is legal in OR, you could tack another couple hundred bucks onto your already pretty pricey stay. My suggestion? If you absolutely must break into the goods, choose a snack or drink that you can replace the next day from Walgreens for a fraction of the price.

I really enjoyed this stay with Kathy and Yogi (5 mo. old rottweiler). They had his name on a welcoming board and a dog bed and gratuity in the room. The valets went above and beyond, keeping our truck and luggage the day we checked out long enough for us to go see the Portland Art Museum, 9which does not have a parking garage), and have lunch at Southpark Seafood. All three are on my list to visit again when we can get back to Portland.
