Green Key Eco-Rating Program 4

With more than 1,200 hotels certified in Canada since its inception in the 1990s, the Green Key Eco-Rating Program awards hotels an environmental rating of one to five Green Keys. Green Key members are then given guidance on how to "unlock" opportunities to reduce operating costs and environmental impacts - and in turn earn more keys.

The Green Key audit looks at nine major areas of sustainable hotel operations:
• Energy conservation
• Water conservation
• Solid waste management
• Hazardous waste management
• Indoor air quality
• Community outreach
• Building infrastructure
• Land use

We had arrived for a stay one night and get one night free and ended up staying 4 nights plus another 2. We understand that this is not a 5 star hotel nor is it 5 star hotel prices. If you need anything or have a question the staff at sandman were more then fantastic. For what the hotel was, it was one of my favorite stays in British Columbia.

There was construction outside (city construction) we kindly spoke with Jessie at the front and he was extremely apologetic and moved our room to better help us with no hesitation.

We arrived a second time on the same trip and met with Joanna. After staying at approximately 8 hotels on our British Columbia trip, Joanna (and Jessie) were easily the best hosts and absolutely a great addition to the staff (and probably need a raise or two) well done you two!

Positives:

- It has a coffee machine, I enjoyed that.
- The sheets are soft, better than average.
- Good blinds for keeping the light out!

Negatives:

- Construction outside of my window was extremely loud early in the morning... So loud I couldn't sleep through it. If you know that is the case, perhaps provide earplugs to your guests proactively, vs being woken up by a jack hammer...
- Internet is really bad. I work remote, so as you can imagine, being connected to internet is important! 3 mb download, and not even 1mb upload. This is embarrassing for a hotel in the 21st century in a major city. I had to resort to using my cell phone which is costly...
- Walls have marks all over it.
- one lamp in my room didn't work, and the other flickers on and off...
- not enough outlets for my laptop... had to unplug the TV to make things work.

Conclusion:

The location is really good, and that's what mattered to me. I'm a shocked by all the problems I listed above, for the most part these are just things that modern hotels have, but obviously this hotel is in desperate need for a renovation. If they did that, and fixed these problems it'd be a great place.

Viral at check in upgraded us and helped us with parking in a very efficient manner. His smile and professionalism was very welcoming! At check out, Ame listened to a concern I had and compensated me by taking off the cost of the parking overnight. That was very much appreciated. The hotel was clean, well-appointed and the staff were very professional and pleasant. Made for a lovely weekend! Thank you.

Stayed at the Sandman Hotel in the middle of August. We had the two queen bedroom Good location. Even though we were facing the main Street, the noise wasn't too bad. Close to BC place and Rogers Arena. Restaurants within walking distance was top notch Room was cleaned and hosts were friendly. My only issue was that the shower leaked a little bit, paint was peeling off in the bathroom, weird dark dots on the wallpaper in the corners and bathroom door was stuck. Otherwise, we had a decent sleep and the AC worked well on a hot night.

Edit - noise level on a Friday night is quite loud. Windows closed and I could feel the bass from the place below us.

Decent hotel on the edge of downtown, within easy walking distance to everything. Unfortunately, they chose to do the annual cleaning of the pool/hot tub now (in the middle of summer, the big tourism season), so these were closed during our entire 5-day stay. Not very smart!

I was at Sandman City Centre to get a tour of the banquet hall for a future dinner event. The banquet manager was very friendly and helpful when showing me around the facility. The banquet hall itself is also well renovated with a earth-tone theme, suitable for many casual and formal events. I would highly recommend Sandman to others based off my current experience.

This hotel is in the Fantastic location. It's convenient to the stadium and the arena. It's very close to the city center and walking distance to some very beautiful sights. The room seemed recently refurbished but a few things are a little dated. Their most comfortable and clean

We stayed on the first floor. We had a pet friendly room which was very convenient and much appreciated. I room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was a fair amount larger this time which in my past experiences has been a huge issue because the bathroom I had the previous time at this hotel was very very small. There was no view from this room. It just looked out to the terrace. But overall the stay was good.

I booked the Sandman Hotel for my self, family and guests during my daughters wedding. Great clean hotel with exceptional customer service. Rather then just flipping the bedding, its changed with fresh washed sheets daily. Thank you Kyle and Stephanie for making our stay welcoming.

Great location, easily accessible via transit. Great bar attached to it. I had to call the front desk twice to get something for my room, and even then, the housekeeping didn't show up, the guy who checked me in did. Room was decent sized, came with microwave, coffee and a mini fridge.

Don't let the outside of this hotel fool you, the rooms are very nice and comfortable. The only issues are that the AC is inconsistent and the elevators are pretty slow. The hotel is in a great location though and has some excellent views!

Great location, excellent check in speed. Underground parking very tight. Good sized rooms with comfortable beds. Appreciated extra pillows and blankets. Adequate number of towels, hair dryer and good water pressure in the shower. Coffee in room with mugs instead of paper cups and water glasses. Tv quality and channels not great and no bedside plug ins for phones. Room was very clean and had a neutral smell. Convenient to have 2 restaurants in the building. Walking distance to both Rogers Arena and BC Place.

Had a blast! 2 adults and 4 small children, and we loved it! Room wasn't as small as shown on website. put up a playpen with no problem and lots of windows (room 424). Pool was a blast for the kids and hot tub was HOT, just the way I like it! Thanks for cleaning the hot tub, it needed it! (People peeing in it made it really dark yellow, yuck!)

Basic Sandman hotel. Rooms are decent and clean. Nothing fancy. The location is excellent for events because it is within walking distance of BC Place and Rogers arena area. Transit is near by. There is a pool and hot tub. No continental breakfast is offered. It is attached to a restaurant/bar so that's a bonus.

Room is tiny which was fine as we were only here for one night for a concert. Housekeeping woke us up at 8am and continued to keep us awake because you can hear everything in the hallway for your room. That was not fun after drinks and a late night concert. Elevator was tiny and sketchy and only one was working but our tiny room was nice and clean. The location for our concert at the Staples arena was great. The shark club restraunt had good drinks and the food was decent. Overall I would say this place was only ok.

I went to Moxie's restaurant in the Sandman hotel for dinner and drinks. I'm only giving 3 stars because the waiter told me that the drink special was a double vodka for $7. Of course, I thought that was a great deal and even repeated "a double for $7?". However, it turned out that he was mistaken and the drink contained only a single shot. Keep your servers correctly informed!! Otherwise customers end up getting the short end of the stick.

Parked here while attending the Vancouver Canucks game on Saturday February 3rd 2018. Parking is fairly tight but being gated it did feel safe. It is nice and close to Rogers Area but way over priced. I paid $25 for event parking. You can park a few blocks away for under $7 and in the future I will most likely opt for that option.

Service at the counter isn't very friendly. The lay out of the building is a little confusing. The place feels like a maze and getting onto the elevayor you need to have your key handy before it'll even go, it's good for safety reasons but a pain in the ass!

The servers at the food places are very nice and food wasn't bad. Rooms are nice and the hitel isn't far from clubs the waterfront and other awesome places to check out around here.

It's definitely a good place for families.

The rooms were nice and clean, staff are friendly, located pretty close to Robson and Granville with lots of food options. Shower kinda sucked, and there was a network drop beside the shower which was kinda weird. There was a balcony if you like shuffling. There was a moxie's and shark club attached to the hotel. Lots going on at the hotel, was a little far from the training I was doing but you can't hold that against the hotel. Viable option when your in the area.

This place is nice. Its a bit busy being in the centre of the city, but it's nice and close to everything. Comfy beds, wonderful staff. Close to any type of food you want. Better then your average sandman hotel

Terrible beds inside of a dumpy room. The staff are very friendly and the lobby area is clean and nice however the rooms are in desperate need of a renovation. My mattress was slumped in the middle and should have been replaced a while ago. For the price there are better options in Vancouver.

5

The heater was broke in our room which made it almost unbearably hot for our stay - if not for that I would have went on the side of 4 stars. I think this hotel is great for visiting downtown, a great location close to lots of great stuff. A rather compact hotel but the staff was very helpful for me figuring out parking, I was also glad that parking was so easily managed in a place that's stressful to drive.

4

The room was adequate, the location was good. The parking was extremely poor. This chain has conveniently contracted a third party to manage their 'secured' underground parking. My vehicle was left 15 minutes and in that time a thief broke my window and took my laptop (with my dog inside the vehicle). The staff were distant and only offered to vaccuum and tape a plastic bag to my broken window. The video cameras were not directed to where my vehicle was parked however the thieves had to exit somewhere. I'm sure the thieves were in the parking lot at the time I parked so I wonder what service this parking management company is actually offering. I will not be staying with this chain in the future.

Clean rooms, decent place. Oddly there was no towel bar (like what you place your towels on) in any of the rooms of people I talked to at the conference. Some rooms were missing a fridge. Walls are pretty thin, but still got a decent sleep. Beds are extremely comfy!

I had a good time durring my short stay at the Sandman. It was close enough to walk to Gastown and the staff gave me directions and a helpful map. They staff in general was very helpful (wake up calls, taxis, directions, local information) and I never felt like I had to wait. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. My only complaint was the towel was short. All in all it was a good stay.

Staff helpful at front desk and generally in this busy hotel. Agree with some of the comments about need for more updating needed compared to competitors , to be fair some was under way while we walked around. Also significantly cheaper than others. Our rooms and other areas pretty clean and tidy. My kids and I are looking forwards to using the pool.

Reception staff gave a fairly warm welcome on arrival and directed us to a safe a place to leave the car overnight. The room was well presented and clean although the bath/shower room looked very dated. The light was not working in the bathroom on arrival and then we had to wait for over an hour for a crib we had pre-booked. Lovely evening meal and breakfast in the restaurant with excellent choice and friendly staff. On checking out we were told we owed 29 dollars for parking which was a rather horrible surprise at the end, on questioning why we were not told about the fee as a courtesy on arrival we were told "it's ok, there is no free parking anywhere in Vancouver overnight anyway"... Would not recommend this hotel to friends.

Went to Moxie's located in the lobby and had dinner and drinks before a concert. Great service with delicious food and awesome drink specials. I stayed at this hotel about a year ago and the room was very neat. Good location if you are from out of town to watch a concert or sport event.

Hotel rooms are small and dated. Second visit we were given a larger room. Staff were nice and helpful. For downtown hotel it is still comfortable and easy access to all shops and places to eat. Restaurants available at hotel are good.

I stayed at a two bed room on the ninth floor.

Starting with the positives. The hotel is very conveniently located. SkyTrain is literally a 5 minutes walk away, and the hotel is only a few blocks from downtown Vancouver. So, don't worry about having not being able to go anywhere if you're spending the night here. The beds are quite comfortable, with fluffy sheets and four pillows.

Now for the negatives. The air conditioning unit was quite loud, and I would recommend turning it off before bed. This may be a problem if it's going to be a hot or cold night. The washroom could use a few touchups or repairs, as the paint was cracking and peering off. The hinge on the desk lamp was broken. Which makes me wonder why they never got around to getting it fixed or replaced.

Overall, it was a decent experience. The issue it had were minor and can be easily remedied or ignored. What's important is that I got a good night's sleep.....after I turned off the air conditioning.

I had an enjoyable stay on the 11th floor. Beds were. Comfy and the views were beautiful. Lots of yummy restaurants very close by, also right beside stadium and close to China town. 8

Excellent location for downtown Vancouver stays. The food at the hotel was underwhelming but edible. Rooms were clean, although I always find the sink outside toilet thing weird. I did not order any room service. The pool is very small, would work for one family, maybe two. Elevators are slower than the stairs up to the seventh floor.

The desk service was friendly and helpful, but one of our two rooms was very small. The furniture was ikea-inspired, which is to say that it is shows it's age too soon. They attempted to slow the wear by placing large plates of glass on the main furniture... But the glass slides easily, so it seems dangerous.

Long wait to check in, almost an hour. Took over 10 minutes just to get an elevator and then it would not go past the maid floor. Has to use the stairs to the 4th floor most of the trip. Room was clean and price was good but they need to fix these 2 major problems. Also request a Street side room for the views. Otherwise the view will be another hotels rooms and alley.

Room was good for the price. We were right by the elevators so we thought it would be a bit noisy but we didn't hear a thing so that was good as well. Staff were great. You can never find a cab in downtown vancouver which really sucks. Not the hotels fault but unfortunate all the same.

It's a decent hotel. It has a great location, but in terms of quality, it's just like every other 3 and a half star hotel that I've been too. The pool was pretty small and the hot tub was mediocre. The staff were friendly though. The two restaurants inside were quite nice and Moxie's did room service, but not during peak hours, which is weird, because that's when you'd think most people would order. Or at least they told me they couldn't. Must have been understaffed.

Hotel atmosphere was nice. Great location next to the Queen Elizabeth theatre. Parkade available as well; however, it was advertised as included when it was actually an additional $22 per day fee. Room was nice with comfortable bed, TV, fridge, and AC/adjustable temperature unit. The downfall of the room was the bathroom as it could have been renovated way better and was not as clean as it should be. Overall nice stay with a few small disappointments that could have fixed with a better price.

I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone who is staying in the Vancouver area. The rooms were very clean and nice. But most of all was the customer service, they absolutely helped us beyond belief when we were in a pinch, and were most helpful. Without them, our trip to Vancouver wouldn't have been possible and would have been ruined. Great people and a great place!
