Getting good vibes from this urban art garden, called Flowers of Hope, by @maxehrman at the historic hotel. Check out his Instagram for more info.
I’ve never been to this hotel, but smile when I pass the doorman dressed in a Beefeater outfit. I hope to check out the hotel’s extravagant interior and European Renaissance architecture when it reopens.
I heard the famous Starlight Room has a great rooftop view of the city.

From the moment I walked through the front door, I felt like royalty. The lobby is scrumptiously appointed with high ceilings and beautiful period decor. Calvin, at the reception desk, was extremely welcoming and helpful, a very nice introduction to the delights that were to follow. Our room was huge, elegant in decor, bright and extremely comfortable for our group of four. Scala restaurant provided complimentary coffee and tea as well as delicious meals while Lizzie's lounge offered a lively evening venue and outstanding views of the city.
The hotel's location made exploring the city via public transportation very convenient. Calvin continued to be most knowledgable and extremely pleasant, enhancing my first trip to San Francisco even more. Thanks.

Convenient.
Nice hotel with lots of history. The rooms are typical small for San Francisco area, but the bathrooms were tiny, you could be sitting on the toilet and touching the sink and shower tiny.
The elevators were a bit slow so don’t be in a hurry to leave if you need to catch an elevator.
Great work out area with lots of equipment. Convenient to lots of great places to eat, drink and sight see.
Great bar and happy hour, friendly staff, Ryan was great and gave us lots of ideas about things to see in the city. Make sure you get a picture with the doorman on your way out or in.

Great older hotel with lots of character and charm. Rooms were clean and we'll maintained. The neighborhood around the hotel is reasonably safe and just a block off of Union square. The Powell streetcar line is very close. Bar on the 21st floor is nice.

If you are looking for a boutique hotel, this one is exceptional! Manager Jason and his staff go out of their way to make you feel right at home. Excellent restaurant, morning coffee, afternoon wine, cool bar on the top floor with scenic views, very comfortable rooms and accommodations all the way around. Excellent location and restaurants within steps of the hotel. I will certainly stay here again. Thank you for making me feel right at home.

The hotel is old fashioned and has really small rooms. I had a queen sized bed room overlooking the street. The place across the way has those wacky wavy men on top of the roof and you can hear the fans through the windows. Thankfully the place across the street does turn them off at night. The bathrooms are small and have an adequate shower. The bed was comfortable and clean. The service in the hotel seems a little slow and when asking for tooth paste they took over an hour to deliver it after a second phone call and walking down to the front desk. The hotel is located in a reasonable location in the city with easy walking distance to the Bart and other areas of the city. The restaurant for breakfast in the hotel was poor quality food and you should definitely eat someone else. When I come back to San Francisco I will not stay at this hotel again.

It is a beautiful hotel. The design is fantastic. However, they are not completely transparent about the room size. The room also has an old smell. It is understandable that the hotel is older, but there could be air fresheners and such to remove the smell. I do recommend the hotel. It has a nice bar and friendly staff. It is also within walking distance to a large number of attractions.

Cant expect too much square footage from any hotel in San Francisco. Do not expect the rooms or bathrooms to be huge or you will be disappointed. This hotel is nice though with nice lobby bar and also top level bar. Very mich walkable to many things right inside the city. Pretty much a proper hotel in the city.

Had drinks hotel lobby bar, which is a cool lobby bar. Friendly and attentive bartender. Also did lunch at Scala's in the hotel, which I have eaten there many times and it is always delicious. Their risotto is delicious and probably about the best I have had anywhere. Great location too. I haven't stayed at the hotel in a few years, but the rooms aren't great as I recall, but clean. Just a bit outdated and small as I recall.

Pros: Location is prime. Walking distance to anything from the mall, restaurants, a McDonald's and a few Starbucks. Breakfast is available right downstairs. Staff is very friendly and courteous. Cons: Hotel is old. Rooms are small and the bathrooms cannot hold more than 1 person at a time. Not a very modern or updated. Drinks at the top floor lounge weren't the best but ok. Got a super deal for under $100/night with fees which is probably the max I'd pay for this hotel. The Hilton across the street looked much more modern and nice.

This hotel was in a great location! We were able to walk to quite a few different places. The room was quite small but the bed was comfortable. The pillows were too soft and plush in my opinion. Unfortunately for us, there was no remote in our room for the TV. Since we asked for another at 9pm, it was not given to us until the next morning. Beyond that, the restaurant, Scala's was nice. We had brunch there. It always took a while to catch an elevator but they are in the processing of fixing that. We got a steal off a discounted hotel site so our stay was definitely worth it!! It was also kind of cool to be able to go up to their club, the "Starlight Room" with no cover since we were hotel guests. The hotel decor was a bit outdated for our taste but like I said, for the price of the stay that we got, we wouldn't mind going back!

The room was quite nice, with a big comfy bed. Fridge is stocked with all sorts of goodies (non-complementary, I'm sure) to appease the palette. The downstairs restaurant as a bit overpriced for what you get, so I'd suggest only grabbing food there if you don't want to leave the property. There's a Starbucks attached for quick caffeine in the morning! Pretty walkable part of town, with the trolley rolling right in front of the main door.

The only reason I rated with 4 stars was because of the elevators - only one working from four... had to wait long time to get to and from my room. I loved everything else. It would be nice if rooms had a small coffee machine

The decorations are very charming and the hotel staff is super nice. Has an old Elizabethan era vibe that is very boutique like. I stayed on the 15th floor with a double bed that was pretty comfortably sized for SF. Only thing I didn't like was the water pressure from the shower. The tubs are nice and deep if you enjoy a soak though.

One of my favorite places to stay in SF. Small room and bathroom but clean and cool building with find of character, the good kind of character. Location is fantastic and staff is always friendly. Great view from the starlight lounge.

Very charming, wonderful location, and great hospitality. The rooms keep in the charm of the date of the hotel with small bathrooms, and older windows, but have updated decor, and all the modern features one would need to be comfortable. It is a bit like going back in time staying there. I would stay again and would recommend for those that like a boutique experience.

Love the Kimpton. Viva the wine hour! The building is beautiful, the staff are kind and attentive. The rooms are small but comfortable, and very clean. One caveat, the windows are "historic" which means that even from the high floors, you can not only see San Francisco's iconic cable cars going by the front entrance, you can hear them well into the night. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs.

Was there for a large party with many attending. The venue was very nice and staff was professional. Great service, many waiters tending to your needs. Good food and drinks. Whether you want a cocktail or beer, or simply a whiskey person, you'll find your thing. Had a great view over.

Stayed three nights and loved this historic old hotel. I had read some reviews of people being disappointed that the rooms were too small. I don’t know where they’ve been staying in hotels but the room was quite comfortable and the great thing about the hotel is the luxurious furnishings window treatments along with the Storico would trim all around the walls and floors beautiful mirrors the bathroom of course is very small because it’s a one 100-year-old hotel but it’s all new except for the bathtubs marble floors I can’t say enough good about this hotel. Service excellent free wine party every afternoon from 5 to 6 PM. Is much wine if you want to drink free is amazing. The only negative I have is no free breakfast and the coffee they serve in the lobby in the morning I got the last cup at 9 AM and it really didn’t taste very good however coffee is easy to fine anywhere overall I was thrilled and I paid less than $200 a night for this beautiful hotel

The Kimpton Sir Francis Drake is a lovely boutique hotel in San Francisco. The room I stayed in was quite charming and beautifully decorated. Unfortunately, I was in town for a work trip and did not get to spend as much time in the room as I would have liked. It was a great stay, though.

Stayed here for work, and it was great. Good views on the higher floors. Central location for business travel. The lobby is very nice. No complaints.

The kimpton Sir Francis Drake is another huge success in the Kimpton family of boutique hotels.. the staff is beyond exceptional, everything one expects from a Kimpton. I had the pleasure of checking in with Chris. I am an Inner Circle member and very much enjoy feeling valued when I check in to any Kimpton. I was so thrilled to listen and watch Chris register the non Inner Circle guest before me and was very impressed to hear him treat them with the EXACT LEVEL of detailed, genuine care in which I am treated. Chris was so great at answering their questions about places to eat, things to do and see in the city etc.. great job Chris.

The hotel is a lovely building and had excellent holiday decor. The Scalla restaurant had excellent food and service as well. We booked a private event, and the private areas were nice and well attended to. The bar upstairs was busy, but we had several booths which gave us space to socialize. The music was less to our liking, and the bar took a very long time to prepare our drinks unfortunately.

I have stayed at the Sir Francis Drake many times and it is usually my top choice of hotels when staying in San Francisco for work. It's conveniently located to lots of stores and restaurants. Lovely hotel. Great central location. The rooms where well maintained and quiet. The most friendly and helpful staff I have come across in years. They did a lovely job decorating for the holidays (what a amazing lobby!!). We missed the evening wine reception and they gave is a free glass later that night. I was expecting to pay a ton but the rates where extremely reasonable.

This is my favorite place to stay in San Francisco. It's an historic hotel with the hipness of a Kimpton. Great location near Union Square. Rooms are cozy or grand--your choice. Nice lobby bar and the Starlight lounge on the top floor with the well known drag brunch on Sunday. Only drawback in my recent stay was the slowness of the elevators, but that may have been due to a full house. Highly recommend.

I had a booking issue and the hotel went out of their way to make my poor experience a fabulous experience. Difficult check in. Took two hours because the staff kept putting in the expiration date incorrectly. As many things that could go wrong did go wrong. Concierge mixed up reservation for tours 3x. Spent an hour making the same mistakes over and over. 1st night was a disaster. Not enough towels nor drink ware in the room for all 3 of us. I must say the bell hops, valet and doorman we on top of it. Excellent customer service from that end.

We didn't stay there but had a chance to check out the rooms. The rooms are fairly small but the bathrooms are even tinier. It doesn't look like there is room to sit on the toilet and open the door at the same time. The whole building has a ton of character. The lobby is beautiful. The bar was great and they had a free wine happy hour during the week.

The room I visited was on the 20th floor, with spectacular views. It's high enough up that you can't even really tell you're in the Tenderloin. ~>=°O The hallway decor is 70s chic, but hasn't aged well. The room was well appointed but it's also starting to show its age. Perhaps that's the charm, but at the rates they charge I just don't get it.

Oozing with character from the moment you step out of your taxi! We received a beautiful welcome here. The staff were outstanding. The room was small however cosy and comfortable. The hotel itself has a lovely quirky charm, you're greeted by a man in a beefeater costume, and walk into the open/opulent lobby area. The staff are all lovely and extremely helpful. We had a super queen room and it felt a little tired. The bathroom was honestly shockingly small, with the door basically touching the toilet. Overall though, I loved the stay here. The location is perfect, the overall vibe is really nice and honestly...it could have been much worse!

For as fancy as it is I was expecting the bed to be more comfortable. The bed was extremely firm. We were on the 19th floor and could hear the night club upstairs as we were trying to fall asleep. Fortunately I brought ear plugs. However, the view was beautiful and we were in a great location.

Of all of the Kimptons I have stayed at, this one is the worst for one simple reason: Lack of truly special customer service that I am used to at every other Kimpton. I won't call out individual people but every person that works there whom I interacted with needs to be retrained in the subtle art of hospitality. Kimpton Monaco Portland, Monaco Denver, and Palomar Phoenix and The Epic Miami are LIGHT YEARS ahead of this place in hospitality. Truly a shame. It starts at the valet and extends all the way through the front desk and bartenders. Get them all retrained please

Amazing customer service! Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. Small rooms, but very comfortable and beautiful design. Older hotel with character and charm. Was a little disappointed there wasn't a hot tub, and we tried to get a guppy for the room which is a Kimpton trade mark and they don't offer them at this location. The location of the hotel is great. So much nearby. We walked or took a cable car to all the places on our list.

Service was good. Had a room by 3pm. The room is a bit small, no fridge or microwave, and chromecast won't work with the TV. The location is nice, it's about a block away from the square. It's a nice hotel if you're going out alot and spend the time in the hotel sleeping. If you want a hotel that you can spend the majority of the day in, they may not be the one.

This was a nice, clean hotel. The decor was fun and the common areas spacious. Overall, no complaints. A word of warning though, if you're placed in a room below the club, which is located on the very top floor, change it immediately if you can. We didn't sleep a wink that night, and unfortunately there were no rooms available for an immediate switch. The bass shakes the walls and we laid in bed staring at the ceiling, involuntarily listening to Beyonce and Lady Gaga until maybe 2 AM. Still, the hotel provided a $100 credit and gave us a new room the following day. Our second room was small, but the only thing we needed the room for was sleep since we spent most of our time exploring San Francisco.

Amazing location but the rooms are tiny and the bathrooms are even more tiny. The hotel itself is very dated and the rooms are so small that I felt claustrophobic. No amenities in the room such as a fridge or coffee maker. The elevators are quite slow. The bed was quite comfortable. Not sure I'd stay here again. My first stay in a Kimpton Hotel, not the best experience. Also my room on the 15th floor should have been high enough to mask the loud noises from the street below but the old single pane windows let all the noise through.

Comfortable and nicely situated accommodation right in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

My wife and I spent our wedding weekend here and were satisfied with our overall experience. Staff were friendly and courteous, our room was cleaned promptly daily and the hotel was even kind enough to surprise us with a bottle of champagne in our room for when we returned from our wedding.

The only real downsides were the long waits for elevators and steep $100 per night deposit.

The hotel design and decor is beautiful and elegant. There was a large middle-age and older crowd for a social holiday event lounging in the lobby/ bar just up the steroids from the door. It looked like a great time for older wine enthusiasts or socialites. The bar space next to the entrance was limited and unfortunately, a simple gin and tonic was quite pricey.

Last night was our company holiday party at the stunning Starlight room. Everything was absolutely fantastic from the security, bar tenders, DJ, holiday decorated space, view of union square Christmas tree and ice rink below... everything was simply perfect!

Stayed a night for my child and I to wander around and look at Christmas trees and lights in Union Square. It was a good stay. The lobby is cool. The beds were comfortable. The furniture and lights were a nice departure from regular Inn accommodations. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Fancy hotel at a reasonable price. Concierge gave us a great tip for dinner, wine at 5pm on the mezzanine, and super friendly staff. The hotel is a little old so some of the walls are thin and the elevators slow for how tall it is, but neither were a big problem. Would definitely come back

It's decent.

For $250 a night I was expecting a bit more than just location but, no such luck.

The rooms are updated but, dated. Meaning they've done some okay upgrades to a truly old building. The bathrooms in the room are tiny... No for real... Your knees touch the tub of you sit on the toilet tiny. Plus, the door to the bathroom in our room wouldn't close. Not a huge deal but... I mean that's a basic expectation.

The location is nice. The view is of buildings and maybe a landmark or two in the midst of all the structures.

Service was good but I couldn't get passed the sights, smells, and constant reminders of how old the hotel really was.

Great location. Old hotel which makes it rough around the edges but you can't blame the place. It has charm and character. It's beautiful.

Overall good experience. Fun guys out front, nice rooms, and good service. There was some things left in the room when we arrived however, so cleaning could be improved. The hotel is a great location though, and makes for a good stay!

Another Kimpton win! The team at The Drake is incredibly kind and helpful. Lots of bars, meeting areas and very quiet floor. High up the views are great.. I highly recommend.

Overall, the beds are incredibly stiff and no coffee maker in the hotel room. Staff is nice, but I'll go back to marriott properties from now on.

Was there for Microsoft event. The bar was kept well and serving in a timely manner. The food was very slow. Place was clean, but bathrooms was quite messy.

Been coming here for 6+ years and always feel like a queen here. Some complain about the small rooms and tiny bathrooms. Hey, small is beautiful and very SF. Love the pet friendly, eco consciousness too. If you need more room go to Texas.

Love the lovely Queens in the Starlight room too!
