The crew is the most friendly and warm in all of D.C., and the rooftop pool is perfect during a sweltering Washington Summer heatwave. And the VIP suite which I was once VERY graciously comped remains the most outrageous, over-the-top hotel experience of my life (Paris and San Francisco and Bali included.)

The rooms are designed to be unique or edgy, but are not very convenient. The shower is in a large translucent spiral that juts out into the room, and since there is only one light switch in the bathroom, if the person sharing the room with you gets up in the middle of the night to pee, the whole room lights up when they turn on the lights in the bathroom. Also, the bathroom doesn't have a fan and there are no hooks or towel bars to hang your towels or clothes. The bathroom sink is large but shallow with a flat bottom that splashes water on you if you turn it up too strong. To me the room is the most important part of a hotel, since mainly you are paying to sleep there In this case I think a standard cheap hotel room would be better. The staff was friendly, so I'm giving a star for that and another for a pretty comfy bed.

Great stay. The gentlemen at the front desk was very professional and courteous. The suit was amazing and location even better.

I cannot say enough about the Donovan Hotel. The customer service at the front desk was extraordinary, and they did everything possible to make my stay a positive experience. From spacious clean rooms, to a fantastic rooftop bar. Anybody coming to the DC area for work or play I would highly recommend you experience the class and great service of the Donovan! Thank you all.

Chic hotel with a nice rooftop pool and lounge. Loved the decor in the room and the view from our room was a nice touch. The location was perfect for date night with my husband. Only negative thing was the elevators. There are 3 but only 2 were working and they were extremely slow. There also was no service elevator so many times you were sharing an elevator with the service employees with large racks or carts that pretty much filled the tiny elevator. Outside of that the stay was great and we will definitely stay here again when we want a night in DC.

Hotel was great. Got in late (after 10pm). The front desk clerk checked me in with no delay, upgraded my room to one with a better view, and offered me a water bottle or glass of wine since I had missed happy hour (I took the wine). The room was nice, with a large tv (plenty big enough to use as a second monitor for my laptop from the bed. They even let me borrow a phone charger (no not for me, but for my colleague who stopped by so we could do some work). The fitness center was modest but more than enough for me with 2 treadmills, some elliptical machines, and some free weights. Great stay as always.

Wonderful hotel with incredible amenities and and staff. This was my second stay in this hotel and I was easily more satisfied than the time before. Free wine in the lobby from 5-6 and a great roof top pool made for wonderful tools to help relax. Only real complaint was that the staff seemed stretched thin and there were times that they were out of spare blankets, but this is to be expected since a convention was going on.

Convenient, clean, very friendly staff. Enjoyed the pool in the morning and the comfortable bed at night. And the rain shower head and botanical soaps and shampoo we're a pleasant surprise. Will definitely stay here for next year's convention!

My husband took me here for a Birthday getaway. Nice, clean rooms. Awesome location! The hotel is currently under construction but it was never an inconvenience. **BE WARNED** This hotel has valet parking only and it is $50+ tax per NIGHT*

The location is good. It's right at Thomas Circle so it's basically in the center of the city and easy to get to most places. My two biggest complaints: (1) It's so hot. When I arrived, the lobby was like a sauna. And my room was also very warm. I turned down the AC but the room was always at least 3 degrees warmer than the setting. I think the heat also made the hallways smell a little mildewy. (2) There was a time when I went to the front desk and no one was there. I had to wait almost 5 min before someone came to help and the woman in front of me said she'd been waiting for at least 5 min before that. They were super nice once they came from the back, and I'm guessing they were just understaffed, but still annoying.

Stayed for 3 days. At check in they were double booked and we had lost the room we reserved. Needed 2 queens but were offered a king room. They did comp us a bit and staff was helpful. Nice area of town. Valet parking out front. The rooms and hotel itself were a bit outdated but I believe they are remodeling sometime soon. Small rooftop pool with nice views bit gets crowded quick and closed at 4 as it turns into a lounge/bar.

I am staying here currently for three weeks with my dog on a business trip. I originally picked the hotel because it was dog friendly but I have to say that the staff and service here is amazing. Ezekiel at the front desk greeted me with wine and dog treats/toys for my dog and Baby Dahl, I believe is her name, so kindly brought him a dog bed and helped tremendously yesterday. Totally recommend & happy to be here for a long stay.

Beautiful views, very cool rooftop bar. Room was modern and romantic. Lots of stuff nearby. Walking distance to clubs, restaurants, and sightseeing. Concierge pointed us in the wrong direction twice so maybe rely on Google rather than the front desk for information.

Excellent hotel, we brought our dog on this trip and this hotel could not be more pet friendly. They also do a happy hour in the lobby every evening with free wine for all. The rooms were great and clean and the location was perfect for walking to all the sights and Metro station

Gem of a hotel! I just had a great stay at the Kimpton Donovan. This was my first stay at this hotel and first at any Kimpton branded hotel. I was a bit nervous when I booked because the price was extremely reasonable considering the great location. Check in was smooth and the front desk staff courteous. Room was clean and the bed super comfortable. The room is a bit on the small side (not cramped by any means) however that is to be expected downtown and was perfect for me. Cleaning staff does a great job. I didn’t go to the restaurant or use any of the hotel amenities, so I can’t speak to those. Two things just to be aware of: 1. They will place an immediate hold of $200 for incidentals and 2. There is a charge of $26 a day for a resort fee that you will pay at checkout. As long as you know about this it won’t be a surprise and you can factor that in when price comparing. The hotel is in a great safe area and close to the Whit House, many restaurants. The metro is a short walk as well. Upon checkout, the gladly stored my bag while I attended meetings the rest of the day. All in all, I recommend this hotel and will stay here on my next business trip.

First and Only stay at a Kimpton property. From the lobby to the room is dirty and unkempt. I guess the giveaway should be that they allow all pets for no fee (Note the stain by the front door). Room was filthy and gross in my opinion. Hairs that were not mine, shorty repairs, damaged carpet, dust, dim lighting... it was not ideal on many fronts. Honestly, if it were not for the friendly bellhop I would give it a 1 Star.

The experience from beginning to end was excellent. I had a late flight and didn't get there until about 2am. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly (genuinely friendly). The rooms are clean and chic; they look exactly like the photographs. On my next trip I will definitely staff here again.

The Donovan Hotel was amazing and the service was outstanding. One employee that stood out the most was Michael Porter and he did an incredible job of accommodating all of my family’s needs. Access to overnight parking is extremely convenient and the food at the restaurant on the first floor was outstanding. If I ever stay in Washington D.C., the Donovan Hotel will be the only place I stay!!!

Nice hotel, would recommend and happily go back. The staff were very friendly and approachable and helped us out a few times. Location is great, 3 blocks from the metro with lots of shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. We also walked to the main sights and it wasn't too far. Rooms are a bit dated, but nice enough.

As with most Kimpton properties this is a chic, trendy boutique hotel. I really enjoyed staying here and the staff was really friendly and attentive. This is coming from a 200+ nights a year guy (mostly Marriott properties). The room's bathrooms are quite unique. This hotel is also pet friendly.

Had a fantastic stay at The Donovan. We were greeted upon arrival by Kris with a pleasant "We were expecting you" and it got better from there. All of the staff were fantastic, pleasant and professional but also "real" and truly friendly. The rooms are comfortable and clean. I appreciated the fact that a room key was necessary in the elevator to access the lodging floors of the Hotel. Had a great and unique meal at Zentan one night and took the staff recommendation for a wonderful breakfast at Commissary Restaurant near by. Key component of the successful stay was the location. We walked to restaurants, monuments and museums. Even took a night stroll to the White House to unwind after our long day of flights and our late arrival. DC is a walkers dream and the Donovan is perfectly located to take advantage of it all. Thanks For a Pleasant Stay.

Great hotel with.amazing service. Got.several texts beginning in AM saying.room was ready for check in. Fab upgrade to huge suite! Spotlessly clean, tons of space. Too bad only 1 night. Hotel sent up champagne and cupcakes for my birthday, arranged for an Uber to Union station . Staff was excellent. Only complaint was that I had to leave!

Room was nice, clean and comfortable, but getting it was a bit hard. Our reservation clearly stated a king size bed but we were assigned a queen size one. When we realized this we complained and were assigned the right room but when they initially gave us the queen sized they still charged us for the king so that's a dubious practice.

Rooms are comfortable, service at restaurant was very poor. Housekeeping does a good job tidying up, but often forgets to replace towels or other items, you have to call the front desk multiple times to get each of these items replaced. The location is convenient if you are willing to walk half a mile or so to main attractions and convention center.

Nice hotel, rooms good size. Located Thomas Circle 14th Street, which was within walking distance to the plenty of shops. The hotel offered wine and sushi every evening a 5pm (freely) which was most enjoyable after a long day of walking about.

Friendly staff, nice rooms, funky but not in a weird way. Good location, but that's relative. Happy hour is a nice touch. Good cocktails, good, scene on roof but unfortunately terrible service. Like the coffee in the lobby but I think I'd still prefer it in my room.

Tired hotel in need of capital investment. Cold shower one morning as hot water was not working. Good location but better options for the rate charged. Dirty elevators, dates decor, cracked sink and mildew smell throughout hotel. Plus hidden resort fee is a joke. This is no resort! Will not be back.

Not thrilled. Look out for hidden "resort fee" on top of room charge. Also got charged for items I did not consume from the "honor bar," although they did eventually refund them. Breakfast was ridiculously expensive with poor service. Also had a long wait at check in with two people at front desk busy tapping at their computers, apparently too busy to bother with a guest. For the price you can do better elsewhere.

10am at check in with Maggie: Maggie is the best! She offered me a bigger room at no extra charge that was ready now, or to wait a few hours. I really wanted the room I reserved so I opted for the wait, then she found me a room asap! Got to check in early and get cleaned before hitting the conference. Thank you for the exceptional customer service!! 7am upon calling the hotel: Already getting a below AVG review in my book. Upon making the reservation I asked for early check in, but after speaking to guest services rep Chris on the day of my arrival he said it's not possible. I hope the rest of the trip goes smoothly

I don't think I've stayed at a Kimpton before, but this one had good reviews and I booked through reward points and was excited. My wife and I just needed a place to sleep while we were looking at apartment complexes in the area, and I thought this would be a great place to stay and show her a nice boutique hotel in DC. Our first experience was walking into the lobby which was...dark and uninviting. It literally felt like being in a basement, or a dungeon. Very weird design choices and didn't feel like a comfortable place at all. I know boutique often means unique design, and I know Kimpton Hotels differ, but this one is a miss. Our second experience was talking to the front desk guy, who was certainly very friendly, but oddly told us we had been upgraded to a room with two double beds. He kind of slipped that in there and it took me saying uh, wait what? We booked a king. He then was just kind of weird about it, offering us to stay in the king if we want, or take the "upgraded" room since it has more space. I eventually just said OK, I guess we'll take the upgraded room, but once we got up there we thought it was just silly. It's a room with two beds, instead of a room with one King Bed. That's really the only difference so I wouldn't much consider it an upgrade. I've worked in hospitality and I know when you're running low on a room you often try to push people into other room types, but he told us to call down if we want to move since they have plenty of rooms available that night. It was all just strange. The room itself was nice, everything was clean and nicely decorated, though I was disappointed in this whole spiral shower thing. Many reviews mentioned how it was an experience, and in the pictures it always shows this HUGE cylinder protruding into the bedroom which looks really funny. I assumed it was some sort of experience shower with jets all around you or something...nope. It's just a normal shower, but instead of a door, you walk into it like a shell. Cool? I guess. But the shower head was just average and it would not influence me one way or the other if I had known. I guess it's just a cool design choice? All in all it was an OK stay, nothing crazy. I wouldn't stay at this one again due to the dark lobby and relatively pricey price. I'd rather stay at another hotel for that money, but if there was a good deal here I'd stay again because service was fine and the beds were clean and comfy.

Stayed at the Kimpton for a weekend getaway. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Only downside may be that the rooms were a bit small, but everything was clean and well cared for. From our check in experience to check out it was a beautiful hotel with nice rooms and amenities. The food at the in hotel restaurant was fantastic. Pro tip: if you're really hungry opt for the $65 meal. It's the chefs picks and it's a lot of fun because you get to try things you wouldn't normally try AND there were items we received that weren't on the menu.

Very chic ambiance, outstanding staff. Wish every room came with the tub shown in the photos, we only got the shower. Comfortable beds, spacious room. Parking is outrageously priced at $56/night. We parked around the corner on the street for $3.65 (we arrived Sat at 4pm). Overall great stay.

I stayed overnight here as I was traveling to New Jersey. The concierge was extremely friendly and very accommodating. They have many extra toiletry/personal hygiene items if you need them and they will be brought to you. The king size bed and pillows were very comfortable, I slept very well. I organized a weekend trip to D.C., and our group stayed at the Kimpton Donovan. This hotel has elevated hospitality to an art form. I have stayed in 5 star hotels that could learn a lot from this hotel. The general consensus of the group was that we all felt like we were home or in the home of a loved one. We felt enveloped in care. We felt like they actually cared about us and our experience at the hotel. I had an issue that I brought to their attention and it was addressed immediately in a manner that exceeded my expectations. The hotel also has a daily reception in the lobby where wine and hors d'oeuvres are offered. What makes this hotel great in the ways that they handle hospitality is how it makes you feel. This property has all of the amenities that you should expect from a Kimpton property. It is beautifully appointed hotel that makes smart choices in the design, layout and use of space. The hotel is also in an excellent location. We were minutes away from everything we wanted to do over the weekend: White House, the new Smithsonian African American Museum; and the National Mall. Many in our group walked to these locations; I did not. I initially tried to use Uber to get around and that proved problematic because it appears that they are not familiar with intricacies of getting around the landscape of D.C. This was not an issue because I never waited more than a few minutes to land a taxi while I was there. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance and visiting U Street is a must. It is a bustling area not far from the hotel; also the location of the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl. A neighborhood institution. The Kimpton Donovan has earned a place in my heart. I will always stay in this property whenever I visit Washington, D.C.

If anyone is looking for a great deal on hotels you can check it out on HotelRaven. com Booked this hotel on there and they had the cheapest rates around... Nice hotel with a quality restaurant Zentan attached to it. I've been to the Donovan several times not as a guest but to take advantage of the associated bars and restaurant on hotel property. Zentan delivers on its Asian themed menu, with a very good sushi program. Atmosphere is upscale but yet comfortable. The adjacent bar on the ground floor attracts a nice clientele during the evenings.

Great hotel with a rooftop bar and pool. Stayed here for a romantic weekend and couldn't have picked a better place. The rooftop pool/bar area serves brunch between the hours of 12-4 which is a great option. The staff is attentive, friendly and polite. The room as well as the hotel decor is subtle and beautifully modern. 4 stars because of a few oddities: The bed was uncomfortable. I woke up with aching shoulders both nights I stayed here. The stylish robes provided in the room aren't built for the voluptuous woman but it is a nice amenity option. Also the hotel body wash smelled like Pine Sol which was unexpected so be sure to bring your own. This is my 2nd stay at this location and I always leave with a great experience.

The rooms are nice but there are some oddities. You have to go down to the lobby for coffee in the morning, there are no pots in the rooms. Strange right. Also, the rooftop pool is only open until 5pm when the rooftop bar (that's open to the public) starts service. Again, I can only swim during banking hours? However, they have a complimentary wine hour from 5-6pm each day and that is a nice bonus. You will enjoy your stay here, the rooms are posh and modern, the staff are great and attentive, but if having to walk to get your coffee is an issue or the pool is a big attraction, you may want to look elsewhere. My wife and I enjoyed our two nights here.

Room was very nice, spacious, and modern. I did ask for a mini fridge, and was told I would get one, and didn't get one in my room. View was decent but had to pay extra for a room with a view. Overall I would stay here again.

Modern is not my taste, but this tasteful, welcoming hotel is centrally located, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. At check-in I received a Coupon card for $10.00 credit at the bar or from the mini bar in my room. Arrived late from SF but the restaurant was still open. Food was great. Drink was even better.

For our first trip to D.C. we stayed at The Donovan, it has a very modern and fancy lounge area when you enter. When you walk in the room there is a very interesting design with a circular shower just off to the side. This was great for my wife and I, but not something you would want to book with your buddy. The room was very comfortable and pretty close to the public transit that we would use everyday. The rooftop pool was pretty nice and just about every night there was some kind of party or gathering up there with drinks and music.
