The Kimpton Buchanan

1800 Sutter Street Japantown/Pacific Heights, San Francisco, CA 94115, United States Access

The Kimpton Buchanan

Kimpton buchanan hotel is located in downtown san franciscos japantown. Its an authentic and historic residential neighborhood about a mile west of union square and centrally located within walking distance to boutique shopping dining museums and nightlife. It has easy access to golden gate park chinatown and fishermans wharf.

Located on the corner of Sutter and Buchanan Kimpton Buchanan Hotel is enviably located where Pacific Heights leafy streets and hip boutiques intersect with the ramen shops and J-Pop storefronts of Japantown and the Fillmores hot restaurants and cool jazz clubs. Pairing perfectly with the understated luxury and residential vibe of Kimpton Buchanan Hotel our neighborhood is just far enough away from the tourist buzz and bustle of Union Square to make it accessible but still a world apart.

Nice location to visit local scene. Rooms was comfy, clean, and service was friendly and helpful. Nice little window bay where you can crack a window and enjoy the sun. Restaurant located in building so you can get food and drinks easy enough. Only down side was no room service, and no in room coffee maker - though there is complimentary coffee in the lobby in the morning.

Stayed here when we had to take my disabled Mom to the hospital for surgery. Although the parking in their garage is limited, they have handicapped parking as well as easy access for people with disabilities (garage area access only). The staff was very accommodating when we had to extend our stay and made it easy for us to stay in the same room even with it being last minute. Staff was very friendly. Rooms were spacious with 3 adults. We had a room with 2 Queen sized beds. Bathroom has sliding door that separates the sink from the toilet and shower. There is a mini refrigerator in the room as well as a desk and chair. Easy access to plugs to charge cell phones. Bathroom comes with full sized shampoo, conditioner and body wash in case you don't like to pack your own. All natural ingredients and you have the option of purchasing your own. If you forgot something there is a rather large list of items they can help with including converters for outlets.

Ended up here thanks to Pack Up and Go travel agency. Room was spacious and very comfortable. We really enjoyed the wine and sake in the evening. Good location in Japan Town but not the best if you're looking for closer to the tourist areas.

Compared to some other hotels in the area, this place was solid. Free wine from 5 to 6 pm, free coffee from 7 am to about 9 am, a firepit on the patio (ask for it to be lit), clean rooms, quiet, mini fridge you can use. My only complaint is the lack of a desk in the room, when there would be plenty of space for it. For gym buffs, the "gym" is laughably tiny and also serves as a path to the patio. It is an easy and safe walk to Fillmore Street.

Love the wine/sake happy hour. My room was spacious and lovely. Front desk service was efficient but not especially friendly. Location is awesome, and price was right for SF. No hot tea/ coffee option in room!? My only real complaint.

I absolutely loved this hotel! I loved the Japanese styled theme and the fact that you are just a few feet away from the Japan Town Mall. ALL staff was fantastic, welcoming and very pleasant. I can't wait to stay here again. The only downside to my experience here was that I only stayed one night lol.

Great stay in Japantown. A good choice for someone looking to stay outside union square. Japanese themed, but tastefully so. Great coffee in the morning.

Quaint little hotel a little off the main San Francisco attractions, but easy to reach. I stayed there for work and enjoyed the well furnished rooms, elegant decor, and comfort. I will return.

The rooms and bathrooms are adequate. My king room with city view didn't have much to look at. The room design is vaguely Japanese and minimalistic but I think maybe borders on looking barren. The only chair in the room was a desk chair; I guess they wanted to make room for you to use the complimentary yoga mat. The area is less noisy than the downtown hotels but that also means you are farther away and it would be a long walk to most attractions. I borrowed the loaner bike and rode it through golden gate park and enjoyed that though. Overall I was satisfied, but I'm not sure I would stay here again unless I specifically wanted to be near Japantown.

Very nice and clean. The guy at the front desk was very helpful but not pushy and wasn't at all nosy. Not Like some hotels(all up in your business) not that guy. He was cool.
Seemed quiet but i over heard folks in the elevator talking saying the walls are paper thin.
It was hard to park my car on the street overnight. I recommend the garage for next time.
Overall I give it a big yes to staying again.

Very good hotel. Charming, nice service, good bedroom and bathroom. There are some bedrooms in the same level the street. It´s not good. But we ask for changing, and they do.
Then, in the 4º floor, a very nice bedroom.

Love this boutique hotel. Staff are super friendly, professional and welcoming. They have a great wine hour for guests. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. Attention to detail has been made to ensure everything you need is available or can be requested. House keeping does an excellent job daily with fresh towels and the beds are remade. Great location and access to public transport. Excellent restaurants nearby. Most enjoyable hotel experience in SF. Only negative comment was the water pressure on our particular shower was poor yet the bath had excellent water pressure, but so minor. Loooove the excellent smelling soaps in the room. Will definitely be back to stay again.

Lovely rooms, wonderful staff. The only problem is the bathroom door in our room doesn’t close. (I don’t mean it doesn’t lock) It only swings back and forth which would be fine if it were level, but it isn’t so it just stays completely open at all times.

We had a nice stay here. I didn't know what to expect. Paid a little extra for the city view room and there wasn't much to see from the 3rd floor, so I don't know if that was worth it.. Otherwise, room was clean and modern. A little ways out from most of the things we wanted to see, so we uber'd around more than we probably would have if centrally located.

Nice trendy hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Nice rooms; spacious compared to many hotels in the downtown area. Parking seems reasonable as well.

My only issue is that the two nights I've been here the WiFi has been unusably slow. There will be bursts of speed where it's acceptable for a few minutes but then it's back to crawling.

Hope you have an unlimited data plan because you're going to need it. Also wouldn't depend on it for work.

Seems harsh but in 2018 any reputable hotel charging upwards of $300 / night should have solid WiFi.

It's a good hotel for the price you pay and the staff are all very friendly and very helpful! They have a couple bicycles that guests can use and if you're staying for a while you can ask for a microwave which they'll happily provide. They also provided an awesome humidifier because my sinuses weren't used to the dry air! They have complimentary coffee in the morning and complimentary wine in the later afternoon/evening. I would come back and stay here again definitely.

Had a great time at the Kimpton Buchanan. The first room I was given smelled like the person before me smoked in it but they moved me to another room when I told them. They also gave me a gift bag with snacks and water. The restaurant in the hotel (not operated by Kimpton) was delicious and had fast service too.

Great location in Japantown/Pac Heights! Rooms are big with lots of light. I had an issue with the AC in my room and the staff were happy to move me to another room. Room was a comfortable stay. And right in Japan town! Convenient to walk around the area. The bed was very comfortable and with a decent sized bathroom. There was morning coffee and tea (and wine and sake evening hour and small courtyard/lawn space but didnt take advantage since we were out and about). They brought a bottle of wine for my husbands birthday! Very thoughtful! The negative was the $38 charge for overnight parking. We paid in an overnight lot a block away. Being that it's not located downtown, it should be a lower price. And the cable guide on the tv does not list out what shows are on each channel. We found it so difficult to know what shows were on on every channel. And channels lagged a lot when we manually flipped through the channels. Other than that, it's a nice stay outside of downtown area.

Not what I’d expect from a Kimpton hotel. Design and staff are all very nice but it’s an old, not very well maintained building. It has paper thin walls and a lot of odd mechanical noises. Had to change rooms to get away from the volume of some and even in the new room they were present just more muffled. Not sure I’d go back.

We absolutely LOOVVEEEEEE the Kimpton Buchanan!!!! We find ourselves in SF/LA every month for work and we have decided that this hotel will be our top choice every time we're in San Francisco in the future. Not only is the location great, walking distance to all of the best food and shopping like Fillmore and Japantown- the rooms are sheik, beds are amazingly comfortable, quiet floors and thick walls, AND icing on the cake is the staff!! They were all so welcoming, wonderful and accommodating. The happy hour was just an extra perk with complimentary wine and sparkling apple cider (huge plus for a non drinker like me)! We loved coming in and out of the hotel ALWAYS greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. We have an extra special shoutout for LOREEN at the front desk who checked us in, outdid her service skills by making arrangements for us to receive a non pet floor, even though that was not the room we were originally scheduled for and there was no availability. She made it happen! We can't thank her enough and the entire staff at the Kimpton Buchanan! We'll DEFINITELY be back!!!! WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL! 100 stars! ❤❤❤

Decent rooms, nice peaceful location. No bar/restaurant onsite despite advertisement. In room television lacks basic channels, asks you to pay to see the channel guide. Overall an okay experience considering it was a last minute booking, but you can do much better in SF for the price.

stayed here over the weekend for Outside Lands and it's nothing to ride home about. The staff was really nice but the hotel is just super outdated (don't judge the photos that you see online at their website). I requested an early check in weeks before , around 10 a.m.,but our flight got delayed 3 hours so we didn't even arrive until 1:30 p.m. and they acted as if they didn't have a room ready but when I reminded them of the early check in request, they magically had a room ready?

We saw trash left out in the hallway for over 3 hours just waiting for the cleaning people to come pick it up but they nope, it still stayed there. Also, the bathroom door doesn't lock so you really don't get much privacy when you're in there. The TV is leaned up against a painting easel (so it's not like it's on there nice and tidy and looks like it's about to fall off).

I know hotels in San Francisco are expensive but I think that if you do more hunting around, you can find a better place. On the bright side, it is close to Fillmore Street which has a lot of great shopping and restaurants.

The staff were welcoming and professional. We had arrived a bit earlier than expected but made sure we were accommodated. They were awesome and helped my friend celebrate her birthday by bringing up some champagne and cupcake which we loved! The location of the hotel was convenient since everything from eateries, bars, etc were of walking distance. We had a plethora of dining options and we even went over to a Korean spa for a couple hours of indulgence. I would highly recommend this hotel for their service, amenities, location, and value. I want to give a shout out for the staff team! You guys were awesome! The personal touches and attention to small detail were not unnoticed! Thank you for making our weekend so special!

Really nice boutique hotel in Japantown which is a very quiet, small neighbourhood. Not really walkable to areas like Mission or Hayes Valley, but a pretty short journey by car or Lyft. The hotel's got a very contemporary vibe and the rooms are clean and well maintained. I also loved all their bathroom amenities - they smelt amazing! I also love that they offer to give you or go get you certain necessities such as curling irons, feminine products, deodorant, etc. for free if you forgot your own. Highly recommend, especially if you have a car to easily access the places you want to go due to its location.

I came to meet up with friends who stayed here during the Cherry Blossom festival. The lobby is small, but nice and clean. The rooms are adequate sized, beds seem comfortable. They allow small pets too, which is nice. And they have a great location, if you want to stay in Japan town. The one thing I noticed that I didn't really like, are the sliding doors for the bathrooms... I don't think they work very well. Otherwise, I'd consider staying at this hotel

Loved this room, very classy and clean. I enjoyed the happy hour as did my son since they offered him sparkling cider. Love the shampoo and lotions. I was happy to find street parking as their parking is a bit steep. I also loved the goody bag they gave us as there was no mini bar in our room. Would recommend.

Great location near the centre part of the city but far enough away to feel like you're not right in the middle of it. Good for someone who likes it a bit quieter at night. Reception staff was helpful with the best eating spots close by. Room was spacious and clean, but could use more furniture, like a second bedside table and a couch of some sort. One negative was that the room didn't have a ceiling light except for in the hallway - had to resort to turning on the two lamps. However, overall good experience and would recommend.

(First time in a hotel) Arrived & checked-in to a warm welcome & bed/room. Arrived there late at night while most food services were closed, & the guy at the front desk (can't recall the name) took it upon himself to arrange an employee to run out & bring some food TO OUR DOOR! Next day, I had breakfast (pancakes) in the restaurant housed in the hotel, itself, & was immensely satisfied. Being the first time in a hotel, the hotel itself, along with its staff, left me with a giant smile. (Stayed here for a total of three nights.)

One of the newer additions to the Kimpton SF portfolio and a great one for escaping the Union Sq area. The Buchanan is well situated in Japantown. I personally love the indoor/outdoor gym where you can break a sweat and then cool down on the open air patio. This is my 3rd time at the hotel and I cannot complain. Very close proximity to Fillmore restaurants and cafes. Can't wait to come back!

Had an amazing stay at the Buchanan. The hotel is stylish and immaculate. Our room had a cute little patio, and was quite large. The staff were incredibly accommodating. We had a friend who ended up needing to stay in the city one night, and we were given a free cot. As well when the complimentary hotel bikes were out of service, they comped our rentals from a nearby rental place. We will definitely be choosing Kimptons in future b

The hotel was great! The staff was very friendly and check in was quick. The room was very clean and spacious. I loved how clean the bathroom was. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in at a hotel, it was very soft. I also liked the soaps and shampoos the hotel provided, they actually smelled nice. The room came with a little nook by the window which was very nice and cozy. There was also a small mini fridge and safe in the room, which was convenient. The hotel is directly across the street from Japantown, which was very convenient. My only complaint is that parking was kind of expensive (and extra $35 per night), but in a city like San Francisco where parking is difficult to find, and expensive, I understand the rates. Also they do not offer free WiFi which was a bummer. In order to get the "free" WiFi, you have to join their rewards program, which I did not want to. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here, I would definitely recommend it and I would stay here again.
