Kimpton CARDINAL HOTEL

51 4th Street East, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, United States Access

Kimpton CARDINAL HOTEL

Once the architectural muse for the Empire State Building, the historic R.J. Reynolds building is now home to The Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. Weve enjoyed mixing Southern manners and modern flair, with a little mischief thrown in. Step through our magnificent Art Deco entryway into a lavish social living room or meet us on the patio for steamed oysters. Step outside to explore downtown Winston-Salem and her thriving art, music and foodie scene.

The hotel itself is nice enough, and they have great pet friendly policies. My experience with the staff left something to be desired. The biggest thing is that I believe I left my $80 electric razor in my room (I’ve cleaned my house and car several times since staying) and can’t get anyone at the hotel to call me and let me know if it was found. Of course if they can’t return a call after two requests I doubt putting it in the mail is something within the realm of what that can handle.

My favorite staycation hotel. Absolutely an amazing place. We found the Kimpton Cardinal a few months back and we have returned again and again. You can't find a better King Spa suite within an hour drive. The staff is always friendly, and helpful.

Visited for a team building event in the recreation space. Definitely a hidden gem in downtown Winston-Salem. With tons of activities and a full bar and food service, it was a great time for everyone. Great space for corporate events or wedding after parties.

The staff did a great job. We went for my wife's birthday, and upon hearing this at check-in, the hotel surprised us with chocolate covered strawberries and champagne in our room after we got back from dinner. The room was nice as well. Kudos to the great staff!

Aesthetically beautiful and very clean. Pros: The staff was fantastic, our room was clean and gorgeous, and the hotel bar had some great live music and cocktails. The recreation room was very cool with a mini basketball court and bowling lanes, among other activities. Cons: No free WiFi (had to sign up for their rewards if you wanted it), no free parking lot (either had to pay daily for valet or go down a block to a pay-to-park lot), and the bathroom did not have a working vent (so it became very foggy and hard to get ready).

Hotel stay was wonderful. We loved our room. Spacious and the bed was comfortable. I would have given it five stars but our breakfast the next morning in the hotel was not good. They were out of some of the menu items and the eggs benedict was very over cooked. The renovations and parking were also a headache. Dinner was delicious and so were the different craft cocktails but I'd skip breakfast all together.

Fantastic service! We have stayed here a few times in a variety of rooms. The spa rooms are great. The front desk employees were amazing. Highest praises to the staff.

It was nice! Comfy and awesome rec room. We were disappointed with lack of free WiFi and no coffee pot in room. You would think a coffee pot in room would be a given in a hotel of this caliber.

Beautiful hotel. 1920s historic building. Fantastic location in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem. Given its location the price was acceptable.

Why not give stars then? Three reasons. One, the animals. It's a pet friendly hotel and that means dogs everywhere. Second, the valet service is understaffed and frequently slower than I felt it should be (though not terrible). Third, we had a room with a tub and shower. While it looked modern and sleek, the shower part was poorly designed and would dump water onto the bathroom floor because it didn't have a door.

Definitely a great place to stay despite the negatives. There's just a few things they could do a bit better.

It was a good hotel with a wine happy hour and other nice amenities. I like that it is pet friendly as well. 4 stars because you wouldn't expect to not have a place to park included, they only have a public around the back of the hotel that is a public lot that you have to pay for.

Upscaled boutique hotel in downtown Winston-Salem. Valet service, bar on site, room service, free bikes to use, concierge desk, sleek furnishings. Some residents actually live there. Definitely a nice place to meet a client or stay while in the city.

Stayed here when my cousin was getting married in town. Wonderful staff, friendly workers, cool atmosphere. Loved the game room area with my nephew and niece. Breakfasts were amazing. Would stay again. Cool place for a lot of family in town for a wedding. Worth the extra cash.

I recently visited this hotel in Winston-Salem, NC. My visit was to their restaurant and a friend that lives there. The Kimpton offers many gathering places inside making it very accommodating and welcoming. I had eggs florentine for brunch and the eggs were cooked to perfection. I will consider staying at the Kimpton because it has everything you need in one place!

This is a great French restaurant and oyster bar. The oysters were fresh and all the good was very well prepared. They have an extensive drink list and creative cocktails.

Went here for my wife's work Christmas party. Party was in the rec room; it had a slide, bowling alley, pool table,& a basketball court. There was no bathroom down there which was a bummer but the rest of the public areas of the hotel were really nice. Definitely made me want to have a staycation.

The rooms and building were very clean, neat and beautiful. All staff I came in contact were very kind and helpful. The bathrooms were well stocked and gorgeous. I loved the bath/shower setup. Their tub hand held hose was cracked and sprayed everywhere. This was my only negative experience everything else was spot on.

My husband & I stayed here for our 10 year anniversary! We love to try a new place each year but I think we've found our favorite! Loved it here! Would love to know what type mattress is in the suite? Best sleep we've had yet! Thanks again for a great visit!

I travel all over the country and stay at 4 to 5 star hotels. This place is awesome. Especially if you are traveling with someone or with kids. Great staff and clean rooms. The recreation room is amazing. Recommend this for couples, families with kids, corporate meetings and events. Great location if you are needing to be in Greensboro or Winston Salem areas.

Attended National Black Theater Festival and stayed at the Kimpton. I spoke with many other festival attendee who paid significantly less rm. rates than me, all of whom were offered festival discount rates. This discount was not offered to me. I was reluctantly given AARP once I inquired. I attend this festival every other yr. and would like to have your facility affordable to recommend and to return myself other times. Your front desk people and the central 800# passed me back and forth w/o anyone being to speak to me regarding my concern. I hope that piece of your service improves soon. Marian Johnson

My 2 teens and I stayed here for one night and wished we could've stayed longer. The room was large and very, very nice. There is a complimentary wine and cheese hour at 5 (all you can eat/drink). The big hit was the lower level's activities: bowling lanes, ping pong table, basketball court, etc. we had so much fun!

Lots of restaurant options within walking distance.

Wake Forest University is approximately 10 minutes away by car.

Absolutely fabulous hotel, restaurant, and staff! I checked in as a mini-getaway (new mom) and it was fantastic. I will definitely use this hotel again and recommend it for guest when visiting.
The complimentary Happy Hour coupled with the recreation room downstairs is too fun. Plus, I wish I had brought workout gear - or better, my workout attitude, because the gym is fantastic!

A really nice hotel that is HUGELY pet friendly. If you travel with a pet, you must stay here. The rooms are top end, they have lots of amenities, including a bowling alley, and the staff is excellent. The hotel is a near replica of the Empire State Building and is within easy walking distance to bars, restaurants, and bistros. Our only rub: they offer discounts but you need to ask for them. We qualified for a military discount but didn't get it because we didn't ask ahead of time.

Hidden gem in small town America! Customer service is top notch. Swanky, yet comfortable atmosphere. Every inch has a designers touch. Rooms are very spacious and well laid out. Walk in glass showers with full amenities make mornings a treat. Bedding is very luxurious and comfortable. Wine reception every evening from 5-6 with nibbles is fun and relaxing. Bar and restaurant offer southern sophistication with reasonable prices. The adult play ground or rec' room is by far the coolest! The only hotel worth staying at in all of Winston-Salem!

The Kimpton Cardinal is a hidden treasure. I thought customer service was as dead as chivalry but they showed me different. Every staff I encountered made me feel welcomed, they were attentive, personable and professional. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms were comfortable. My heat was broken but they were very attentive to the issue and apologetic. I will definitely return!

If you haven't had the pleasure of staying in an kimpton hotel you are missing out. This is the third one I've stayed in and while all are fantastic this one is truly outstanding. The rooms are huge, the staff is delightful and knowledgeable and they really go out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. Special shout outs to David, Andre and Chris! They really made our trip something special.

A great location in a historic building. Room are modest in size and well appointed. Small things prevented a higher rating. Had to call the desk because We couldn't figure out how to turn on bedside light, the electrical outlets /charging port not working until I moved the nightstand and plugged it in, no ice bucket or coffee in the room. Coffee available in the lobby only at 7am. Restaurant noisy, bar even more so. Service and food quite good. Just do not ask for a martini glass; nonexistent. They serve them in cheap champagne glass like one finds at a banquet hall wedding. Corrections of a few things and they might get 4 stars

Only saw the lobby and the recreation room in the basement but everything was clean, orderly and with nice style. All employees I encounters were nice, polite, and helpful. I'm looking forward to an excuse to return and experience more of what the hotel has to offer.

I love the Kimptons. I always stay there with my 2 big dogs, and they are always welcome - truly! There is no pet fee, no weight limit (1 is 65lbs the other is 80lbs), and always comfy beds for them and treats! The rooms are comfortable, as a reward member I get a credit for the mini bar in the room and free wifi. This last trip, they went above and beyond as I was traveling pregnant and with the 2 pups by myself. I forgot my charger in the car - at 9pm they got it for me. They forgot the dog beds and dog bowls in the room, and comped my valet charge as an apology. It is always worth it to stay with them!

Such a cool hotel. This was the home of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and now the have redesigned part of the building into this lovely hotel. The rooms are brand new and decorated beautifully. The rates aren't too bad for the history. The service is next to none and the amenities, fitness center and recreation options in the basement are unique. Amazing restaurant in the hotel as well!

Grabbed a drink at the bar with my wife and our friend. Good service. Our waiter gave us good suggestions and all the cocktails were delicious. Would recommend it for casual drinks. A bit pricey if you're trying to spend a lot of time there.

This hotel is gorgeous.

If you love history, then don't pass up an opportunity to spend the night in the Reynolds building, which was completed in 1929 and served as the blueprint for the Empire State Building.

The rooms have everything you expect from a Kimpton: modern design, comfortable beds and spa tubs that beg for a bubble bath. Other great perks include free wifi and free wine hour in the evening.

Everyone on staff was so nice too. Zach delivered great service, upgrading us to a suite and securing dinner reservations at the hotel's restaurant, The Katharine, on a Friday night! I will definitely be back again.

The hotel itself is very beautiful and the room was immaculate and well appointed. The hotel employees were all extremely professional and courteous. The first room we were given had a huge, noisy air-conditioning unit right outside the window, but they moved us across the hall, so no problems there. This room was very quiet and comfortable.

We had dinner in the Katharine and the food was very good, although a few items seemed quite overpriced. The service was very good also. The main disappointment was the noise level in the restaurant. It was almost impossible to have a conversation or hear the server. This is an unacceptable situation when spending this amount on a dining experience. If they can solve the noise problem here, it could be a 5 star review.
