The hotel will be closed between 5th February 2019 to the 20th March 2019 whilst we complete the refurbishment of the hotel. For bookings during this time please refer to our sister hotel Amba Marble Arch.

Many places consider themselves the "heart of London". But we have a stronger claim than most. Park Lane, Oxford Street, Mayfair - some of the capital's most illustrious addresses are right on our doorstep. And the hotel has been part of The Knowledge for longer than anyone can remember. The Cumberland is a perfect base from which to discover Londons unique heritage. After all, were part of it.

Lovely hotel in a great location.
Would have had 5 stars but receptionist was not engaging and spoke to colleague whilst ignoring me whilst booking me in. Room was good but supplies in fridge could be better for the price.

Fantastic hotel. It feels very American, specially in the size of the rooms. Staff is nice. Breakfast is a must. It is delicious. The breakfast staff were so attentive, it made a great impression on all of us. Will definitely stay here again.

Very good service - have to say that! All of them. But the drinks were mediocre at best. Not the typical bar type atmosphere due to the hotel style, accepted. But the drinks need to get better. All four of them were different drinks, all four of them were not worth the money. And definitely the least assortment of memorabilia I have seen so far. Nothing worth to remember or get back to. Will go back to the original.

Not somewhere I'd have ever chosen myself, but a job in London landed me and my wife there.
Generally very pleasantly surprised and didn't experience any of the problems that other reviewers did.
Nice clean room, decent size. Friendly helpful staff. Great location. Really good breakfast.
All the staff we meet were nice, however Mr Dan Elbow (almost Capaldi) was the guy we dealt with most. Give him a raise, he was great with any issue that cropped up.

Room space was good. Location was excellent. Ironing board and iron supplied was convenient. Breakfast buffet choice was excellent. Our expectations were exceeded on the quality of the food at breakfast. The only disappointment was both elevators not working properly. One elevator didn't work at all and the other was in serious need of maintenance, hence, we used the stairs during our entire stay. This was ok for some but enormously inconvenient for older customers.

Really big and nearby everything. The breakfast was colorful and we enjoyed it. The bed was comfort.
On the other hand it's crowded and loud. Noisy in the lobby and if you tried to open the window for fresh air. The carpet on the floor is dirty and smells. We were not lucky since got a room at the corner far away from the left and hence have to cope with the smell and a the sound of a couple of heavy doors we needed to open. The air conditioning is too loud so either to get cold or to sleep sweating. We have told that we got already the extra bed for our daughter, but we had to call with no reply and to go to reception to ask for it again. When we are back late night, we saw the extra bed installed, but we got 3 big luggage suits which are not ours. We had to call again without answer until someone came to apologize and to take the luggage out. Anyway, for me never again.

last christmas eve an old homeless person came to this hotel reception and gave his bag of change (i think it must’ve reached more than £200 assuming how big the bag was) he wanted to book a room but the receptionist at that time kept insisting that the old man should leave with a very harsh tone and didn’t respect him AT ALL. i believe everyone is a customer no matter what they look like and did the receptionist even has a heart?? it was extremely cold yet she didn’t even care to at least check whether there is a room available or not or tell him how much is the price of room for that night. she was angry for no reason. i felt guilty for not speaking up at that time. i hope that old man is blessed. the manager should really hire someone with a good heart rather than someone with good brain but nasty attitude.

room wise, it’s good and spacious, but somehow it felt a bit dirty as i could feel that the bed or the carpet had a lot of dust or something. location is good, and breakfast needs more range of foods i think.

One of the most expensive hotels I have stopped in. For me, for London, I would prefer a cheaper hotel as I would spend most of the day away from my room. A hotel in London for me is literally a pillow to rest my head, a nice shower (clean bathroom) and somewhere to eat a nice breakfast. Value for money this place doesn't offer.

Update: June 2018
I've been back quite a few times, and even recommended the hotel to friends, however I'm disappointed I am never remembered for my loyalty, and feel a different atmosphere since previous stays.

Most recently, the air conditioning was broken, however after a short while they changed my room which was great, however there was an unpleasant feeling generally from the staff.

The next morning I went for breakfast. Being a frequent guest, I was greeted by one of the great familiar staff, however she was subsequently told off in front of me belittling her, embarrassing her for greeting one of your regular guests, and then scared to say goodbye as I left.

I am returning next week to say goodbye to the great staff there as I'll be choosing a different hotel in future. Shame.

Update January 2018
Lately I have been staying in this hotel with work on multiple occasions. These are my comments...

One of my most recent stays I was kindly assisted by Ewelina, nothing was too much trouble and was very helpful, which was great!

The location is great (right by Marble Arch) and the double windows blocks the noise from the road which is also good.

There is a good selection of evening meals which are nicely prepared, and there is a very good selection for breakfast.

A few stays had not been so good, however they have done a lot to turn this around, and have been very attentive subsequently.

All in all a great place to stay in a convenient location.

Attended a one day training events organised by Hodder publishing. The room we were based in was equipped as you would expect, round tables, presenters at the front with a laptop and a projector. There were pastries available on arrival and other snacks were provided throughout the day. Lunch was self serve buffet with hot or cold options, hot codes was either chicken or fish with rice or roast potatoes. Vegetarian dish was couscous with tomato salsa, I'd class that as a side rather than a main. Hot drinks were available throughout the day but only instant coffee.

Great location! Amazing breakfast selection as well as great room service options!! Nice size room, beautiful bathroom. NO pool. Beware of holding funds on credit cards; my card as well as my girlfriends card were BOTH charged full amount of hotel stay versus one card just being on file for incidentals. And we're currently waiting for the funds to clear.

Lovely hotel. Great location. Nice restaurant serving good food. Given the size of the hotel, it did feel a little like a warren and was a touch dated in places. But room was clean, modern and spacious.

This is a wonderful hotel. We were on a tour with Trafalgar and stayed here 3 nights. Super rooms, best breakfasts in London. We had dinner in their restaurant and it was one of the best meals ever. We'll be back.

7

Great location, bang opposition marble arch and within walking station of the marble arch as well as the bond street tube station. And ofcourse, being at the end of oxford street, it could be the beginning of a massive shopping spree :-). It has a main building and an adjacent one. Avoid accepting a room in the latter as that part is older and a bit off the main block. The main block itself has renovated floors. Rooms are spacious for a central London hotel. The windows don't overlook anything g worthwhile. The small windows don't allow sufficient sunlight in. There used to be a lounge, that is shut down because of renovation. Rumour has it that next year the hotel will be launched as a hard rock hotel.

It’s an old hotel with a lot of rooms, you will never got to know the location of your room, you will always got lost inside the hotel. The only good thing about this hotel is the location but you can find better place. Or recommend it unless you really want to be in the place.

Rooms are very tiny and small, also not that clean.

It’s a very busy hotel and a lot of visitors from all around the world could be found in the lobby.

Brake fast is just Ok. Nothing special at all

Stayed in a deluxe family room. It was cozy, but clean, pleasant and affordable. Enough room for 4 people to sleep comfortably, along with a desk, refrigerator, and a coffee maker. Staff were excellent. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

The hotel was a great experience overall to add to my trip to London. The style of the lobby was very modern, rooms were comfortable, and maintenance was great. I don't know if it's common in London to have a basement floor; that really isn't a basement in a hotel. Food buffet had a great variety. One issue is the WiFi, it can be super slow at times. As I had no data usage because they didn't have any towers for my company that I am paired with. Overall 88 of 100 (4 Stars)

Came here for a course and it was a lovely place, modern and bright although not clear where I had to go and no-one available to direct me.
Lovely food for lunch and plenty of it. Clean bathrooms but again poorly signposted and a good few minutes walk if you dont get lost so missed some of my course content.

Plenty of renovations going on and I had a room with not a single power socket. Not even by the desk to charge the computer. Located above Marble Arch Station and prime shopping district so that's a plus. Request for newly renovated room if possible.

Too average hotel 💨, when we checked in at first they gave us old rooms not as the pictures of the booking and later we when to see around four or five rooms to find the similar one of the booking made. The rooms are bad and old comparing to other 4 stars hotels, the staff here are friendly. The only thing that worth to stay here is the location only, the beds aren't comfortable, the towels smells bad, and the water push in the shower is weak. And we booked a twin bedroom and every day they put only one small 330ml Natural bottled water and another one fizzy water. HONESTLY IF I HAD THE CHANCE TO DO THIS TRIP AGAIN I WOULDN'T CHOOSE THIS HOTEL. Many 3 stars hotels in the area has much better rooms.

The two stars are one for the location and the other on for the staff.
ZERO for rooms
ZERO for cleanness
ZERO for money value

Great location. As part of a large group I was able to see inside several rooms and the variation in quality, amenities and overall space inside is quite pronounced. I had a large older room and my son had a tiny room with more modern amenities. It didn't live up to my American standard of a deluxe hotel- it felt more Best Western than Embassy Suites, but the downstairs spaces we used for meetings and gatherings was great. The restaurant was pricey but operated 24/7. The bar was appreciated.

Premises are fine and spacious, however expect the restaurant on the lower floor in the winter months to be the ambient temperature as whatever the outside temperature is.
Absolutely freezing inside, guess that would be fine in the hot weather.
Seriously inside the restaurant was approximately around 5 degrees.
They could always change it into an ice bar with little effort involved.

I used to be a regular customer since 2012, up until 2016 they were doing OK. Since then, they started going downslide; smelly rooms and bathrooms, uncomfortable beds, broken furniture and the room prices keep rising. The newly refurbished rooms (end of 2017) seem to be alright, but still not to the expected level... Disappointed.

Excellent location, room and hotel features. Note business travellers may be placed in the annex building, this is good as the rooms are up to date and comfortable. I was surprised to see the large bar and relaxing areas near the reception have now gone on my most recent visit.

Stayed 6 nights from Sept28 until Oct2 2017. AC only turned on but thermostat do not work properly. It just kept getting colder until you could not stand it so you had to turn it off. Then the room started getting hot. The TV did not work and they did not send anybody to fix it even thought we asked 4 or 5 times for days in a row. They did try but failed to fix the AC. They offered to move us to another room but I did not want to repack just to move. The breakfast was good. Everything else was just average. Not what a 4 star hotel would be in America.

Great location for work event but the hotel is certainly dated and nothing to write home about. It was September and around 60-65deg outside but the rooms were boiling. The "aircon' was a total waste of time and did no cooling at all. The bathroom was decent looking, however if you had a shower the water went under the glass partition and flooded the floor.

Check in was a smooth process with a lovely lady called Noelle. Breakfast was also good and there was a great variety of choice along with space to sit. The lift buttons on floor 4 of the 4 panels only one worked.

Stayed in Cumberland in 1985 for the first time in my life when i was 2 years old and from that date this is our favorable place to stay. I have few comments here to share why I highly recommend this hotel although I found many people didn't recommend this hotel because of the room or the quality of the service. As a frequent traveler to London you should take into consideration the following points, if you are looking for a cheap hotel with five stars hotel then London shouldn't be your first option and if you think that you you will stay in large room in central London for less than 150 pound and great service also you can't find it here. Cumberland is one of the best hotel for an average night that will cost you around 200 pound.. if the rooms are small then don't go with standard room and choose their executive rooms which is very nice with an access to the lounge which is my preferable option Or family room then it worth each pound you pay them other than this you have to choose another hotel which is not in central London or Oxford street .. What you pay you will get .. I highly recommend this hotel for family and if you would like to enjoy easy access to central london. The team are really great although they are busy with the guests, breakfast buffet is just fine but you can imagine they have more than 600 guests they need to serve them at once, but you can enjoy fresh fruits, coffee and live station for omelette which is excellent as they serve hundred of guests every day .. So I think this review is very realistic .. I highly recommend only there executive rooms and family rooms.

Spent 3 nights here for business, great location and especially for me as last day had to hire a car (nearby is Europcar) and at least for getting out of London via the north was easy. The hotel itself is very impressive, great staff who are friendly. Only slight negative was looking at floor plan I must have had the smallest room on my floor, not a massive issue. However the fire doors outside my room close after a certain time and when people pass through these late on it is noisy. Maybe the hotel can look at that at some point. On a last note breakfast was one of the best I've ever come across. Overall despite some negatives I can't give less than a 5.

Excellent location near Hyde park, a subway station, rental bikes, many shops (Primark opposite) and eateries right outside the lobby. Rooms clean and well stocked with simple amenities, smell is nice (no smoke or otherwise). The place is oriented towards a particular crowd, Arab speaking, but it doesn't matter much. Breakfast had a wonderful selection, fresh and tasted very well.

I attended a seminar here. The location is right next to Marble Arch so it's very good if you wanted to be in the centre of London. The hotel was busy but there was plenty of staff to help. The Room the seminar was held in was very good, no external noise the water was in bottles and chilled. Cannot fault the venue.

The positives: Great location central to shopping with Marble Arch tube station right next door. Very good noise insulation. Good breakfast spread. Helpful concierge. Negatives: Small rooms made even pokier by bad design. (Who needs an iron in its own bulky console in the middle of the room?) Badly planned toilet design ( when sitting on the toilet one backs into the toilet roll). Beds whose mattresses sink.

Attended a large conference (ca. 600 attendees) here in late 2012, and as a hotel manager myself at the time - who was working for the same company, no less... although I wasn't there on company business - I was quite impressed to see the very high standards maintained, general cleanliness, and adequate staffing levels... at least within the Meetings and Events department. And the location of the hotel is superb; you really can't get any better if you're staying in London.

This time I booked a room with a double bed only to be told there were none left. Housekeeping did put a double sheet into the room to be fair but it's not the same. I was still charged the double rate, but I've not yet checked out, will see what they say... 2 stars

Location is the key. Service is generally good. The lifts are slow and normal waiting time is 2 to 3 minutes. Concierge service is very good and they are very co-operative. Great hotel. So central for anything you want to do and close to Marble Arch tube. What's not to like? We were upgraded due to the first room being unsuitable, the hotel was one of the quietest at night I have ever slept in. The doors work so they cannot be left to slam! Always a good thing in my book. The breakfast was exceptional and mind blowing considering the size of the hotel. Really well organised. Will certainly be going back. Merry Christmas to all at The Cumberland.

Excellent hotel with clean rooms and great customer service. Some of the room can be a tad small but that's fairly par for the course in central London. Sure convenient location near the marble Arch and Oxford St.

Breakfast was great. The room was good. It did smell of smoke but 30 minutes with the window open cleared it. The only downside was the lifts. Too many people trying to use them. It didn't matter what time we tried to get a lift it took us quite a few tried to get one.

I stayed last time in Dec.2016 for about 4+9 days. I found the hotel is very well organized, clean, reception is friendly, Breakfast is the best. The only thing you will hear the alarm every day or every mid night, which bothers a lot. In all its a good selection.

Really comfortable and well equipped rooms. Room service and concierge services take a lot of time to provide services but that is if you get hold of them in the first place. Breakfast times can be busy. I recommend the omelette bar which serves food omelettes in whichever variation you want. The place is centrally situated therefore if you are waiting for your taxi to pick you up you will face a long wait as spaces are very quickly occupied.

A good hotel with lots of rooms. Located right next to Marble Arch. Renovated usual small London size rooms. Get an executive room if you can as the small executive lounge is nice.

Reception gets crowded and staff a bit slow. Its a busy hotel more suited to tourists and business travellers. Not a good choice for a romantic break or luxury break.

One staff member who deserves a shout-out for excellent customer service is Ewelina from the executive lounge.

The hotel is located in a good spot at the end of marble arch. The foyer is large and open and lacks personality. The staff were very efficient and friendly. The room I was in was small and abit tired. But frustratingly no socket near the bed or desk to charge laptop or phone. The bed was also very soft and squashed up against a wall. Breakfast was very good with lots of fresh food and plenty of choice.

Great location, friendly stuff,, but so busy reception. The front door doesn't work properly.. And the rooms are so small and the decorations needs an update.

Not good for the money, book the thistle which is basically next door but much better. Rooms are small and very basic, a lot of finishing not done on decoration. Not what I would class as a 4 star hotel, disappointing.

The Cumberland is part of the Guoman hotel chain which I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in before this visit. It is literally 12 steps from the Marble Arch Underground exit. No seriously, I counted. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a good shot of the outside of the hotel because this area of town is insane with traffic but needless to say it’s nothing spectacular from the outside. Inside however, is a different matter entirely. The lobby is bright and edgy with some of the weirdest art I’ve ever seen in a hotel reception!

Reception was pretty busy with lots of people being checked in and as you can tell from the background noise on the video there was a lot of hustle and bustle. I’ll be honest it felt more like an airport waiting area than a cosy hotel lobby. It didn’t take long to sort everything out and I was given my key and directions to my room fairly rapidly. One thing I did like was that a credit card was not required at check in and instead all bills such as room service or the bar were to be settled as you enjoyed them. I much prefer this as if you’re sharing with someone (I wasn’t on this particular occasion) it’s easier to keep tabs on who pays for what.

The room was fairly spacious although there was a lack of wardrobe space. This was made up for by an inset in the wall where I guess large suitcases can be stored. I loved the use of space with the iron and ironing board being hidden in behind the mirror but I was disappointed that my TV was not a SMART one – it seems there are standard rooms and SMART rooms. Most importantly the bed was super comfortable and I spent most of my time lounging in it. I was also impressed with how quiet the rooms were despite being so close to the main roads.

One of the first things I did upon arrival was have a shower. It was deliciously hot but sadly you can’t control the power which was a bit disappointing. I did love that the towel rails were heated and the towels themselves big, fluffy and snuggly though so we’ll let them off!

If you’re lucky you can get these rooms for under £150 a night but the average seems to be about £220 and Guoman offer a Best Rate Guarantee where if you find a lower publicly available rate on another website, prior to, or within 24 hours of booking they will create a new reservation for you honouring that lower rate – well worth looking into as I found rooms for quite a bit less on Trivago.
