The property is great, and in a lovely location, however it is a bit dated and in my view doesn't deserve the highest rating.
One major issue with communication: I called several times the hotel prior to my arrival, no answer. I sent an email, again, no answer.

I would not recommend this hotel. It is over priced, over valued and the rooms are so high tech my husband and I couldn't even figure out how to turn all the lights off. The Tub is so high that you can break your neck getting out of it. The rooms for the most part are small with little space. We arrived for a bit of our honeymoon and the room they gave us was in the basement...with no window.. when we complained they offered us a higher floor for $500 more per night (on top of the $760 for the basement room) insane! It really soured our two nights there. I would not ever go back. We were happy at the Four Seasons and other hotels similarly priced with great accommodations.

The hotel was nice and was ideally situated for walking around Rome. The breakfast was good and staff very helpful. However the swimming pool was not ideal. On 2 of the days we stayed the pool temperature was ridiculously cold to the point of not being able to swim and children were unable to play. After 5-10mins trying to swim my wife collapsed on getting out with cold shock. Glasses were left around the side of the pool and there was not enough canopies for shade. We specifically chose this hotel for the swimming pool given we were visiting in July. Very disappointed with the pool area but the hotel gets 2 stars for the helpful staff and great location.

Beautiful hotel in the heart of Vatican city. To have an amazing pool within the city was a great experience. The service staff were extremely professional and helpful Nice breakfast buffet.

The good thing about this hotel is the location as it is quite , and close to downtown

Safety level is high

They have a private garden, pool and spa

In general the staff are friendly and nice

The red level customer service is overrated , nothing special, not recommended, when staying just choose the regular services as the difference in service is not worth it.
I think that the 5 stars are too much for this hotel , Just like a 3 star service .

Red lounge has no milk in the coffee machine

Complementary amenities were promised and not delivered, called many times and still had bad service.

Noisy staff calls every morning while we are sleep for stupid reasons that could be postponed

Room service is slow

Damaged my clothing in the laundry

The grounds at Gran Melia are beautiful. The welcoming was spectacular.
However the club level facilities - known here as the red level are not what we have received at other club levels throughout the world and I would not recommend the one at Gran Melia Rome.
For what you are paying, the food is basically non existent.
It is refreshments and cakes throughout the day and one small set of h'ourderves served from the kitchen in the evening. There is no self service or buffet as such.

Beautiful rooms, with stunning view of the Vatican. Amazing pool and decent buffet breakfast however quite expensive to order food from the restaurant. Great service and care given by the staff.

I just wanted to thank all the staff for their welcome and hospitality on our recent trip to The Eternal City. It was perfect. The room was great, the food superb, the room was so clean and thoughtfully left every morning and evening for turndown. I can't thank you enough and very much look forward to returning to you one day in the not too distant future. An Oasis of Calm is a crazy city!

The staff was great and super helpful. They anticipated everything and switched languages immediately from Italian to English as soon as they brought up my reservation. It was really unexpected and awesome to see them anticipate their guest's needs so rapidly. Local knowledge of the front desk staff was perfect and they had some really great suggestions upon arrival. Rooms were immaculate and definitely what you would expect from a Gran Melia. Breakfast was similarly incredible.

Wow, What an impressive Hotel this is.
Lavish grounds in the immediate vicinity of the Vatican.
Like the Bel Aire hotel placed in the eternal city. Hardly any hotel in the middle of Rome has such spacious grounds and such a beautiful impressive layout.
Once there you feel a world of serenity around you right up on the hill of Rome in San Gianicolo. It’s like arriving in another world.

For being a former dilapidated orphanage and vacant for more than fifty years this place has truly come a long way. A total gem!

Hotel is ok. Rooms are comfortable and breakfast good. Poor TV (little in room entertainment) which is usually fine, though after long days out an hour or so on the bed would be nice to relax. Poor Wi-Fi reception too. But it's well presented and well located next to the Vatican.

Perfect location, a very short walk to the Vatican, and about a 30 minute walk to the Colosseum. The service here is top notch, and the breakfast buffet, with to order items is very good.

Reviews must be hotel staff and friends. Hotel is in good location and staff are friendly. The compliments stop there. The rooms are incredibly noisy. You will hear footsteps from above and all the noise from the corridor. Expect to be woken by loud noises. Food and drink prices are frankly insulting. 20 euro for a jd and coke. Hotel very basic 3 stars at most for me. I have stayed at many 5 stars, this isn't up to par

If you want to relax by the pool and enjoy the summer in Rome this is the right hotel. Very nice garden, comfortable rooms and moreover it has a really nice location. Just few minutes away from Trastevere, Campo dei fiori e Piazza Navona.

Contemporary luxury and Italian design and elegance scream at you upon entering the Melia.
The staff are extremely courteous professional and efficient.
The room albeit a superior room was small and heating never seemed to be quite right and room could have felt cosier.
The spa was impressive and the clarins brands products in abundance for ones face / body pleasure et revival.
Prices are high so your extras bill can hurt at the end of your stay. Keep your mini bar closed I strongly recomnend.
The surrounding gardens gave a splash of greenery to the already beautiful and imposing structure of the Melia.
Not surprisingly listed as one of the Worlds Leading Hotels.

Absolutely fantastic hotel. Very verbal to the City and 5 minutes from the Brasilica and St. Peters Square. Luxury hotel with all the amenities you'd expect from a Leading Hotels Of The World member. Paradise in the heart of the city.

Lovely hotel set on a hill right by Vatican and sant'angelo castle. Room is small but beautiful and tastefully decorated. Service is superb! Only drawback is the ridiculous breakfast buffer set at a whopping 40.00 euro per person per day! We skipped that and took a walk down the street to the many cafés.

The positive points: good service at a great location, close to the Vatican. The common area is very nice, and the rooms are in good condition.

Unfortunately there are quite some negative points as well:
- The rooms are very small, everything is cramped up in a small area.
- Not much of a view from the rooms.
- Expensive, very expensive. Not just the room, but breakfast (36 euro/pax, want a fried egg? add 9 euro), bar (cocktails are 17 euro, beer 12 euro), spa, etc. Almost everything is extra, even a cup of tea costs 8 euro.
- Breakfast is disappointing with little selection, not comparable to others hotels in this price class.

In general an OK hotel but I wouldn't stay here again, it's not worth the price.

We chose this hotel as we wanted to be out of the centre of Rome and nearer to Trastevera. It is about a 20 minute walk to both but be aware it is at the top of a hill so you will need to save some energy to get to your bed! It was also a bit hard to get to from the airport as the Leonardo Express takes you to the centre of Rome and you have to then get to the hotel with your luggage in tow. There is a transfer service available from a kiosk in the airport train station for €16 each - we used this on the way back and let's just say, wear your seat belt and prepare to learn how to swear in Italian! Directions on the hotel website would have be helpful and appreciated. Although the hotel looks very nice it was quite expensive for what it is. Facility wise, you have to pay to use the Spa and any of the nice looking double sun beds from the website photos which didn't seem fair or worth it. Cocktails were around €15 each and the wine started at €40 per bottle. The staff were helpful and pleasant enough but I didn't get the feeling they were happy! We went down to breakfast one morning at about 10 and forgot to put our DND sign out. We came back and the cleaner was in so we went for a 10 minute walk. On our return she was still there (we had left it pretty tidy!) so off we went for a other 10 minutes. Went back again and she was still there so we knocked the door (awkward!) and she rather rudely just barked '5 minutes' at us and didn't even look at us. She came out after a minute and slammed our door and stormed into the cleaning cupboard opposite without saying a word! Then, strangly, reception kept dialling our room and hanging up when we answered. All very odd and still unexplained! There were inconsistencies with policies and procedures between staff (i.e left luggage, concierge info on tickets) which confused us and we also witnessed a lady get very upset on check out as her bill was way more than what she expected. The receptionists couldn't seem to offer any evidence against what she was disputing but refused to budge on the bill which left us feeling like we had to write down our own records of what we put on the room. At the end our bill was only about €10 more than what we expected and I guess that was our error. Also, disappointingly they wouldn't let us use the gym showers before we left after our last day sight seeing (I know this is an extra request but it is the only high end hotel I've stayed in, in various countries, that has denied this!) which was a shame, although they let us use the one by the pool which helped a bit. Breakfast was hit and miss, not a huge selection and lots of extras you could pay for (like any other egg than scrambled!) but overall what was available was good quality I felt. The room had all the essentials (unless you prefer tea over coffee!) but was a bit small and we could smell cooking fat, possibly from the adjoining building as I'm not sure we were by the kitchen, but we were on the end. All in all, I would return if I found a good offer as it was nice to be away from the noise of the centre of Rome and to have an outdoor pool but I'll definitely be looking at other hotels if we ever have the pleasure to visit Rome again.

The hotel is ok, a very nice one actually. However, there is some staff pretty rude, like miss Tania from spa. I am a red member; and when I went to the spa, she treated me like if I wasn't paying at all.

She was very rude, I asked for her name, and when she gave it to me, she told to me that nothing is going to happen to her, she yelled to me.

I am mad and disappointed... The others members of the staff was such a sweetheart and very usefully, it was a shame that people would bother me, and had people like miss Tania. .

A fairly new hotel but luxurious, modern and very welcoming. The staff make all the difference in being incredibly helpful and friendly - no hint of snootiness to be found in some establishments in this price range. To be recommended.
