Property's Green Action

To protect the environment, we are reducing water use, energy consumption and recycling waste with the goal of limiting our carbon footprint. We integrate sustainable development into our operating procedures, contribute to preserve local communities and the natural ecosystems in which our hotel is located. With all sister hotels, we have already planted three million trees as part of a global reforestation project supported by the United Nations. The last but not the least, we engage our partners and suppliers in their sustainable development strategy and integrate them into the responsibility chain.

Certifications

Planet 21 Bronze

AccorHotels created an action plan that offered actions listed below to promote sustainable development, tailored to the hotel context. Those initiatives are structured into 4 pillars & 2 specific issues:

- PEOPLE: Raise employees’ awareness of the eco-friendly practice
- CUSTOMERS: engage guests in a sustainable experience
- COMMUNITIES: work hand-in-hand with local communities for a positive impact
- PARTNERS: co-innovate to open up new horizons

- BUILDING: Move towards carbon-neutral buildings
- FOOD: Strive for zero food waste & healthy sustainable food

Then, to go even further, each hotel selects other actions from over 60 additional initiatives. This flexible system enables it to build its own program in line with AccorHotels’ commitments, but also reflects the hotel’s local characteristics:
- Its prior level of progress on sustainable development
- Its priority areas for improvement
- The environment and local issues

A weighting mechanism establishes the action achievement level with a score that places the hotel around the higher levels. Each level marks the progress hotels are making in implementing the Planet 21 program.

Sad can't give more nice hotel pool etc not cheap at 150 pounds a night and then breakfast and 12 pounds parking on top and for me 15 pounds pet dog had room service several times not once was it correct and never was food anything but warm good choice but expensive 10oz steak chips and onion rings 26 pounds sauce 2.50 extra and 5 poundsroom charge burger best value at 15 pounds with chips lamb was lovely but at 18.50 no sides a bit steep. Staff were lovely but a did seem short staffed was confirmed when asked . Everywhere a bit dated and rooms very dark particularly if you want to do makeup enjoyed my stay but for a 4 star needs to pull it's socks up

Used to love to stay here and it was a real treat. Feel like the quality has been compromised and service has also been down graded. Breakfast used to be the best bit but was extremely disappointed with the quality of this. No personalised customer service or menus and now they have got a Starbucks franchise in the bar taking away the enjoyment of sitting relaxing in the lounge. Will not be back in a hurry!

Stayed here with my son on a business trip. We enjoyed the pool and spa, very relaxing of an evening or a refreshing morning swim before breakfast.
The food was beyond amazing, presented well, and mouth-wateringly good, also a good range of foods, lots of different types of countries. Breakfast, was a buffet, a nice range of pastries, cereals etc, and hot buffet, including sausages, hash browns, bacon, standard English breakfast style, all cooked to perfection. Would definitely recommend, if staying in Devon, friendly, helpful staff, near a shopping district. Would stay here again.

I booked the Mercury Exeter for my birthday, we have never stayed in this chain of hotels before. The hotel is in the heart of Exeter and the cathedral, shops, bars and restaurants are all a short walk away, the hotel has good parking. There's a pool, and also a gym at the hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful and they are very professional. The hotel is very well maintained and our room was lovely. We stayed in a double plus room so we had extras like a coffee machine, hospitality tray, a daily newspaper, free WiFi, toiletries and robes and slippers to wear throughout our stay, the bed was very comfortable. We ate in the hotels restaurant at breakfast where there's a vast array of lovely food and we also had an evening meal which was delicious. We had a snack in the hotels bar which was also very tasty. I'd definitely go back and I would thoroughly recommend this hotel as we had such a lovely stay.

Having stayed here many times in the past over many years, this time was disappointing. Bar staff complaining to guests about the management situation. My room was not ready well past time of check-in. The restaurant was another disappointment, it stank of fish. Diners openly complaining about the service. Our drink order did not arrive at the table. The room was not a great improvement. We paid for a superior room. The room was cramped, had worn paint so bad even the wood was showing through. It was very tired. Definitely not worth the money.

Fabulous hotel. Lovely, unique decor. Good leisure facilities. Excellent bar and restaurant. Breakfast very comprehensive. However, parking is at a premium and, as such, is extra, on top of room rate (unless you have a blue badge). One of the options we liked most, was the ability to extend your stay to 6pm on the day of departure, for a mere £20. Very good value. There were a few issues to be addressed - e.g. lots of dust around the vent and fire alarm in the changing rooms, and some of the paintwork needs recovering. Otherwise, all in very good state of repair, and a very enjoyable stay.

The hotel is nice, close to the center. The breakfast was very good and varied. Also in the hotel there is a good size pool and a gym - free of charge. The parking cost is £12 per night.

Excellent hotel - couldn't be better placed for the Cathedral and the central area for shops and places to eat and drink. Close to quayside area as well with variety of unique local product shops and beautiful walks by the river. Check in was a smooth and simple process. Room very well proportioned with comfy bed and wonderful shower! Breakfast was very well organised - tea and coffee order taken as you say down and delivered by the time you returned from getting your food. Standard selection of hot and cold buffet items - everything we tasted was delicious! Added benefit is the spa and gym area - we made use of the pool and jacuzzi both of which were at just the right temperature and gave us justification for a big breakfast. Only slight downside is the car parking charge - very much on the high side at 12 pounds per day although we were lucky and able to park elsewhere at relatives. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended hotel.

Really nice hotel. Friendly staff and good rooms. Stayed on a family room which had space for 3 and was quiet at night (apart from night traffic at the front of the hotel but it is a city centre location). Good pool and very nice breakfast make this feel better than a budget hotel without too much extra cost! Parking is charged at £12 per day (March-18)

Mercure Exeter Southgate has proved to be an exceptionally wonderful hotel that provides guests with high standards of service, amenities and facilities. The hotel facilities are listed on their website, but what they have not mentioned is how brilliant, friendly, attentive, efficient and professional their staff are. The hotel offers beautiful well furnished quiet rooms complete with flat screen TVs, coffee making facilities among other amenities. One can also make use of the swimming pool and other facilities.

Thank you for a wonderful stay and see you again in the near future.

We stayed with friends over the weekend. We had a lovely room and fabulous staff who couldn't do more to make us comfortable. We will be visiting again. It is close to the shops and amenities also the wharf. If you stay in Exeter the Rendezvous restaurant is within a few yards and Dart Farm which is 9 miles away was lovely.

We stayed in a privilege room which exceeded expectations. The room was decorated nicely and the bed was comfy. We weren't expecting any of the extras like, toothbrush, tooth paste, espresso machine, chocolate and free mini bar; very nice touch. We had a lovely meal in the evening, food was great and the service from the 2 young gentleman was very good. Location was brilliant; perfect for a bit of retail therapy.

I stay regularly at the Southgate on business. I find the rooms clean, comfortable and functional. Some rooms are noisier than others. But overall I have a good sleep quality.

The rainfall showers in the rooms are excellent.

Staff at reception and in the lounge are friendly and efficient.

The gym and pool is a bonus and is well used by myself.

I find the food at breakfast inconsistent in quality including the menu options. From the buffet, I find the bacon undercooked. It would be nice to have a fresh fruit salad as opposed to the manner in which the fruit is currently presented. Sometimes it is unavailable. Bar food in the evening is also inconsistent in quality. I have had the range of bar dining options and to be honest, I find it quite disappointing overall.

The best hotel experience in Exeter so far. Having stayed in other Exeter City hotels previously we were looking for a better hotel without being dear.

This was a great result. FRIENDLY STAFF, EFFICIENT YET WITH THE TIME TO BE WARM AND HELPFUL, MADE ALL THE DUFFERENCE.

Mary in housekeeping is a character I cannot forget and all were a step up from the usual chain staff.

The establishment has good rooms and good breakfast to start the day. It's all a little dated and shabby but we knew that from other posts but LOCATION wins. Very close the centre.

Fair price booked with the hotel, a little better than the usual sites on the web.

Recommend for a few nights.

We visit Devon 3-4 times every year and it is always a pleasure to stay in the Mercure Southgate. T he recently redecorated rooms are comfortable. Bathrooms are nice but a bit too dark. They require more lighting. Also can do with a hand towel hook on the wall. Initially we used to stay in the superior rooms but these do not have the chest of drawers which we find in the Classic Rooms. T his is an important feature, otherwise without these chest of draws there is not sufficient space to put our clothes. If this point is put right, them we will start using again the superiors rooms as long as they have been redecorated.
Another point which has been introduced recently is the payment of £12 per 24 hours for the car park. This is most irritating as I believe clients should not have to pay for parking the car whilst staying at the hotel.

My stay at this hotel was my first ever in a Mercure hotel and I was very impressed. Staff were very friendly and always answered any queries with a smile. Food was very good, breakfast was a great away to start the day. Our arrival was earlier than planned but the reception staff took our luggage and stored it away until the room was ready. The bedroom was very clean and tidy and the bath robes were replenished daily. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

It was nice to be able to park at the hotel, a big plus. Check in was quick and easy. Dinner was good and we enjoyed our food. Only minus point at dinner was the waiter serving the wine, we expected him to open the wine and pour it, he was obviously to busy to bother and just put it on the table and left me to do it, NOT good enough when you are paying £20 plus for it. Service in the restaurant was otherwise good. Breakfast was good with a decent selection. Our room was a bit noisy with people thumping around above us, this happened several times during the night, Bed was comfortable and room clean. We were disappointed we only had a shower and no bath, we do like to have a bath after a long journey. We would stay again. Thank you all.

Check in was excellent. French lady - Maude, I think was her name was very welcoming and efficient. Bar staff were again great and very friendly. Leisure facilities were good, although your pool water was not as clear as I am familiar with. Breakfast was delicious, excellent choice and quality was good. Staff did very well keeping up with topping up buffet considering there were a large number of hungry rugby players in house. Well done. Many hotels would have struggled with such demand!

Bedroom was excellent, great furnishing and comfy (bed was a bit squeaky though). Bathroom good, really liked the big shower. Air conditioning very efficient and quiet which again some hotels struggle with. Housekeeping did an excelent job and were also friendly when we passed in the corridor.

Excellent location. Very quiet and also close to town centre.

Didn't use the restaurant other than breakfast.

Staff very efficient and friendly. Hotel and room very clean, very comfortable. Food excellent. Lovely atmosphere. Will definitely stay here again. We normally stay in Hotel Du Vin as it is now called but since being taken over has gone down hill so the Mercure Southgate will be our new place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Very good, helpful and polite staff. Clean and quiet hotel. I was so impressed when one of the maintenance staff saw me struggling with luggage on both hands and quickly opened my room for me. Fantastic service. Good local knowledge and easy access to most places of interest. A bit disappointed with some of the plates in the restaurant. The are tired and should not be in a 4 star hotel. However, this is minor and we will certainly be staying in this hotel in the near future.

Although over the phone it was not made clear there is a £12 a night carpark charge, we had a very comfortable stay. The chef kindly stayed over time to give us an excellent steak dinner! The beds were comfortable and everything very clean. The staff in the restaurant were well trained and plenty of variety for the breakfast . We will be staying again. Thank you.

On arrival the girls at reception were very welcoming as we're all the staff throughout our stay.
The room though didn't live up to the word privilege. The free drinks fridge was sparce and the coffee machine only giving three cartridges with no milk option or any trace of a tea option.
As for the room itself, it appears to have no difference in size or quality than a standard double room although I do have to say it was comfortable if not a little dated.
The spa was great no issues there.
The proximity to the city centre was also a good point .

Very convenient centrally located hotel in quiet part of Exeter. The only real issue were the rock-hard beds - so much so that neither my wife nor I could sleep. We were told on check-out that we could have pre-reserved mattress boosters - not much help if the hotel website doesn't forewarn you that the beds are so hard. Another issue was the all the left room-service food on trays left in the corridors. Not a nice sight for guests when walking to breakfast in the morning. Collecting them last thing at night would not be too difficult. We weren't sure that the bar needed such intrusive music. It diminished the atmosphere there.

On the positive side, the staff were friendly and helpful and there was a particularly good welcome from the Reception staff. Breakfast was quite good.

Beautifully lighted with wide French windows open to treeline, cathedral and city view on the hills makes it perfect picturesque and with sunset view on Sunday evening in clear sky ( unusual) made my arrival evening a perfect welcoming and pleasant one. So did not miss my home. Front desk was very cordial. Shower and bathroom s nicely lighted with wooden long shelf made me to decorate with cosmetics and accessories to feel home. Bed was good so had great sleep. Tea arrangements with hot chocolate made me happy person each morning. Loved window view when rained next day. I chose this hotel compared to other option because of architecture of the building. Had a very productive stay.

The staff were welcoming and efficient, the rooms were clean and very comfortable with all amenities & facilities we needed. The restaurant food was lovely. My elderly mother came with us and had the accessible room as she uses a wheelchair she remarked that this was one of the best disabled access rooms she had ever used. This is a major observation as she has been physically disabled for 44 years. We couldn't fault the hotel and will definitely return.

Staff were polite, friendly and professional. The tea and coffee supplies in the room could have been improved. I stayed at another 4 star hotel on the same trip and a nice selection of packaged biscuits was provided, along with more options of instant drinks, hot chocolate sachets, cappuccino sachets etc. Also not enough milk was provided.

Unfortunately not enough complimentary shampoo/ conditioner/ shower gel was provided. I used the hotel swimming facilities which were great, but as there was no shampoo available in the pool room, this meant I had to go back up to my room to shower properly and this exhausted the small amount of shampoo that was provided. I'm sure I could have called for more, but it just makes things a bit more awkward when these things would be so cheap to supply.

But the staff and general hotel surroundings were great.

The staff made this break; they were without exception always helpful cheerful courteous and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. The location was perfect along side the ancient city walls. The cathedral and city centre being a gentle 5-10 minute stroll away. Breakfast was excellent, book before 10:00 pm to get the offer price of £10. This price was not bettered by any other city establishment that we saw. The evening menu was good but there was little change day to day. Generally the hotel appears to be well used, including coach parties and conference bookings but without ever feeling crowded.
The building fabric and the furnishing are starting to show signs of age and use. These are minor but a critical inspection would be useful. We noted the wear patterns in the public area carpets, upholstery buttons missing their caps, water stains on the pelmet in our room and peeling paint/rot on the outside of our window.

The initial prestige room I was given smelt like vomit and cleaning enzyme. So, the previous guests were probably sick and the room still had a foul smell. After reporting this to reception, I was swiftly given a new room, which was fine. So, overall, despite the initial "surprise", the overnight stay at this hotel was pleasant. Breakfast and dinner were good and the pool/fitness suite were a nice perk to enjoy during my short stay. Staff were attentive and positive during service throughout my stay.

I loved it. The atmosphere in the hotel was calm welcoming and relaxing. The staff were charming helpful and professional at all times. I was most impressed by the barman who remembered my dog's name when we went back in the evening.
The decor was lovely and of a high spec. Our room was comfortable and stylish with the beds soooo comfy and the bathroom well appointed.
All in all my husband and I will return - and so will out little dog!!

The staff were impeccable, so polite, helpful, friendly but mostly professional. I was very impressed by every staff member we came across. Thank you. The hotel is lovely, the food was delicious and the breakfast cooked perfectly. The leisure facilities were excellent. The only thing I would change would be to be able to adjust the lighting more easily in the room. It seemed all or nothing but this is a very minor point. We also found a bra behind one of the bedside drawers but again this is minor.

When booking a hotel in Exeter this one came highly recommended - I was not let down. It was cheaper than other hotels yet had high quality reviews. The lobby is welcoming, really nicely decorated. All the staff were super friendly, I was served by a young receptionist who was very humourous and lively. A 24 hour bar is also always a bonus. The rooms were standard size, comfortable with clean bathrooms

Been a few times for work and have stayed overnight once. The food is delicious and the rooms are lovely as well - especially the bathrooms. Nice good, hotel, but personally I found the decor more OTT than luxurious. The rooms were of high standard, powerful shower and everything in the room you should require without asking for it.
We stayed the previous night at a hotel in babbacombe which beat this one for me as it had the added luxury of super soft towels, full breakfast included and friendly staff as an added touch all within the same price.
The staff were friendly and helpful with any queries we had but didn't go out of their way to make you feel welcome, feeling less personal but more corporate. I would stay again but wouldn't order the Phil Collins cocktail as it was a lit stronger than described!
