Location was beautiful.

Price was good.

Wi-Fi was slow.

When we went in for check in, they hadn't cleaned our room. I thought we had walked in to someone elses room. I had to go back to the front desk and tell them our room was a mess. They gave us another room on another floor and didn't apologize for giving us the wrong unclean room.

I'd compare this place to any Baymont hotel on the mainland. Bare minimums with no frills.

Cozy hotel with nice view out over the bay and tropical garden between rooms. Wi-Fi wasnt working when we were there, and limited parking, but they're luxuries when on holiday. Handy general store with breakfast & lunch available out the front of the hotel.

Pretty decent place to stay overnight. Bed was a little stiff and the hot water was iffy but was still a good spot to do a 24hr. stay.

Older place, but nice. Huge rooms. Great alternative to the more expensive places to stay.

This quaint hotel is centrally located making it easy to travel around Hilo. The rooms could do with a bit of updating, but in Hawaii, the goal is not too be in the hotel room the entire trip. The staff is friendly, the rooms are can and the view is nice.

This is the old uncle billy's hotel. New owners. Same friendly staff. Cheap place to stay. If you want amenities or a spectacular room, go somewhere else.

Rooms leave a lot to be desired but the easy access is rewarding. Uncle Billy's sandwich shop is to die for...

This hotel is not the nicest visually by many people's standards, but I think it's amazing. It has a kind of laid-back, classic architecture, with tropical plants and flowers everywhere and quiet ukulele music playing in the lobby. The whole place is just charming. The receptionists were friendly, it's near the ocean, and there's coffee in the morning.

One of the last locally owned hotels. This location closes on February 1, 2016. Very Sad. Uncle Billy's Hotel

Fairly standard hotel located in a nice area of Hilo. While the location is nice and quiet as it is separated from town and nearby Liliuokalani Park, getting to town can be a bit difficult if you aren't renting a car.

Good for a place to crash for a night. The lobby area is beautiful with a nice view of the bay. Housekeeping needs to step up their game quite a bit. Other than that the staff was wonderful.

Comfortable room, nothing fancy but great for the money. Unfortunately the air conditioning unit's filter had not been cleaned recently so I had allergy issues throughout my stay. The lack of an elevator in my wing was a minor annoyance too for those with lots of luggage.

The only reason why this hotel has more than two stars is because people are factoring in dirt cheap pricing.

Here is a list of complaints about this hotel.

1. Cockroaches longer than my fingers are roaming around
2. The linens and towels while clean were all stained. The first day some of our pillows smelled like feet.
3. The hotel is so budget that homeless people use it as a place to stay. We noticed them going out to their cars with cardboard signs in the morning.
4. Beds were hard as a rock (This is actually the straw that caused us to leave)
5. There is really no good climate control in the rooms, just a window unit and the windows in the rooms never really shut all the way because they are slats.
6. We only got hot water one of the nights we were there
7. This place is very old and it it shows. Needs major renovations. The elevator was very small and scary to use.
8. Wifi is only available in the lobby and still only provides a bad connection.
9. Gross stains everywhere around the room and bathroom.

Pros about the hotel

1. Garden area is beautiful (main area only)
2. Staff was very nice. They know the hotel is a heap of junk but they do their best.
3. Good location for Hilo. Near some wonderful gardens and beaches.

Well I mean it's a hotel. You get what you pay for, right? It's cheap. Like it's not terrible by any means, just old. Everything works fine, just old. Doors to outside could use se grease and maybe some new slides and tracks, but they open. My only complaint is that I reserved a room at least a month out, requested 2 beds, got here, and only got the 1 bed. They say requests depend on availability. Not sure if I totally understand that because why am I reserving a room then? But it's a decent hotel otherwise. Like most other reviews say, they need to invest in maintenance but nothing worth turning away for.

Well we just stayed there, and there is no free breakfast, they told us because it was free we did not miss out on anything??
Reason we booked was for this and cheap. We asked for a room with kitchenette but none available. We were told that our room could not power a toaster. The frogs in the moat that surrounded the units barked untill dawn but we were able to bear that. The whole place smelt damp and uninviting.
The usual air-conditioning Mac truck sounding was expected so we left it off and opened the windows to the frog ruckus..The walls were very thin and we could hear every toilet flush and bedroom escapades of the couples next door, boy they could giggle.
Honestly looks like Uncle billys bit tired and lacking funds to renovate.
Having said all that we went in eyes open and from other reviews we knew what to expect but still hoping our experience would be better than the others. The front desk staff were wonderful and helped us book tours and gave good general information, really felt they were holding it all together.
Would I stay again.? .. No . Ps dont feed the cats that come into the lobby.

We had a wonderful time at Billys place. I read a review a few below that describes our attitude to a tee. Yes, it isn't a plastic hotel, yes, it's older, yes, the nature abounds. I loved the review the guy posted and would like to add that their restaurant is fantastic and the band's they have in there are real Hawaiian.
We will stay at Billys on our next trip to Hawaii.
Oh, and the Hilo side blows the Kona side away in beauty.
