I think 4* for this hotel is probably a bit of a stretch. The hotel overall needs a good update, specially the rooms that have a cheap look and feel. The buffet food was rather average to low quality and the worse part is that the main dinning room doesn't even have AC. They have a few fans hanging of the ceiling but definitely not sufficient for the area's hot and humid weather. Having lunch/dinner at in the dinning room was always a challenge with the heat. I tried the 'Mexican-Restaurant' and I wasn't impressed either. I mean the food in the Mexican restaurant was better than in the main dining-room but it was nothing to write home about. The swimming pool is very small and it doesn't even have an in-pool bar. I was shocked that they don't allow drinks in the pool (not even in plastic glasses) yet there were hundreds of children (including babies with no diapers) in the pool. I mean, a beer falling into the water would be like a drop in the piss ocean...On the positive side, everyone was very friendly and access to the beach was very easy. Pity that we couldn't use the beach because of the amount of seaweed (this was a natural event, so not part of my 2/5 star rating).

My philosophy, never go with high expectations... that way your best let down. The resort is great and food is average at best. Unfortunately mother nature worked up some seaweed that has messed up the beaches and has a not so pleasant odor to it. Make the best out of all situations and enjoy life. I would definitely say try this resort with families end you get to enjoy the other Viva Wyndham resort close by which is also nice. As for my personal preferences, we visited the Royal today for the wedding we are attending and it was extremely nice and kidless!!! The activities are way more fun an inclusive also.

Kinda torn on this review.. Staff not very friendly,, just very business like, but food and bars were good. Pool area was clean and pretty, but closed at 8 pm and you can not take drinks into the pool. We had a member of our party get sick to their stomach, and the resort wanted to charge us $100 US for the blanket and sheet. We argued the fact that you cant predict when you might get sick and they ended up not charging us,, but it really seemed like a scam.. We had our AC on high from day one (we were there for 6 days) and it never got truly cool in our room. There is NO elevator, so be ready for stairs.. The main restaurant (buffet) offered themed nights, but the offerings of said themes was very minimal.. Overall, we had a great time, but I found myself wanting/expecting more for what we paid.

Great vacation destination. Lovely small resourt with beautifully beach and nice sitting and dining yard inside. Food is not the greatest but fine.

Excelente Service. People from vacation programs should be more specific on price when offer their packages. Rental car is not accurate bad service.

Very small resort everything close to access. Food not bed but not match variety of the food in the buffet. personal is nice only one thing I didn't like, everywhere you come is crowd. you have to catch place in the shadow,but security take your stuff away if you don't show up in1 hour this is the rules.so I thing it worth 4 stars not more.

Love this place it had excelent service and where ever you went around the staff would always greet you, the beach is sooo beautiful, I have no complaints for this place. I would come here again for sure.

The staff is amazing here they make you feel like your family and wont leave any smile unturned. Manuel had given us a great time here with alot of fun same with Armando and Antonio all gave us so much fun with activities and night time entertainment along with the other animicons.

Not to large of a resort so getting around is easy. The food was good. The drinks can be a bit weak but when I wanted something stronger I would just ask for a double and they would make it for me no problem. The beds are a bit hard. The bathrooms could be a bit cleaner. The But all in all I would definantly reccomend this resort and would come back. Had a great time!

Love the all inclusive. ..visit the Italian restaurant! Buffet is awesome here. Staff is fabulous. At first didn't want garden view but was close to everything and wound up enjoying.

Marvellous beach and very good situated. Food and rooms average, cleaning outstanding. Tennis court in dangerous condition, very old and poor rackets. Service very good and many activities. Surrounndings very safe and good possibilities for jogging. The wi-fi is very slow but the Satrbucks with speed Internet connections is very near. Good place for relaxing vacation.

Food at the restaurants was really good, but not so much at the cafeteria! Drinks were all right, nothing special. There is only one pool which is a downside, but in the morning and afternoon it's not too busy! The shows at night aren't the greatest, mostly only enjoyable if you're a kid. I would say you get what you pay for, but even then I think you could find better for a "4 star" resort!

Simple and small all inclusive resort in the Playacar area. The 3 on-site restaurants we tried were really good, however the daily buffet was uninspired, and after trying the same offerings as were found in the restaurants definitely not of the same quality. It was a small buffet with only minor variations in the daily food choices, so if you're a fussy eater that like variety you might have issues finding food to eat. The drinks from the bars were not watered down although many of them had a lot of sugar and syrups in them and not enough real juice. But they were friendly and made variations as per your request. This resort catered to a group of about 500 people and those i met were mostly from South America and Western Europe, with a few groups from Canada. The workers mostly spoke basic English, Italian, and German, as well as Spanish, but anything too complex could be difficult to convey and they mostly stuck with Spanish with other languages thrown in to get their points across based on who they were interacting with. The rooms were clean and comfortable with A.C. and lots of light. You had to pay $2 US for the safe and you only got 3 complimentary bottles of soda and one of water in the fridge on your first day. With mostly non-potable water in the rooms we resorted to bringing cups of water to the rooms to refill our bottles. The nightly performance started at 930pm and was put on by the hotel's animation crew who also did the daily activities. While they were entertaining they were amateurs so don't expect anything fancy.

Great resort, nice and small, relatively quiet, no lines for buffet or a la cart restaurants, plenty of lounge chairs, room is a little dated, large pool, there are quite a few families at this resort so be forewarned about having children making noise, beach is outstanding, and is soft and deep, great entertainment, nice reasonably priced resort within 25 minute walk to 5th Avenue in Playa Del Carmen

Our 14 days stay here felt like paradise. Really good hotel overall with a nice beach.

Sub-par food. Drinks were good. Shows were entertaining but not remarkably well done. Lots of issues with the room when we first got there but were resolved within the first 48 hours. Definitely geared towards European population- VERY little English was spoken but plenty of Italian and German.

The pool, the food, the DRINKS are so good! AND it was not far from the shopping center! Some staffs REALLY made our stay special. My kids love thé activities and night kids spectacle .

Staff is attentive, the shows are fun, and the resort is small enough to easily get to your room if you need to without a long walk.

I would say this Mexican resort is above average, 3.5 out of 5. Like most all inclusive Mexican resorts, the food lacks variety and taste. Clean resort with friendly staff. Thank you.

Wyndam Maya much better...Not very kid friendly here...European guests smoke like choo choo trains in Courtyard its gross should be a smoke free hotel..need a laundry room

It's a good resort overall. The location is just perfect, right on the beach with lots to do. The food was ok, at best. There are restaurants that require reservations with better food but you cannot eat there every night. Not sure what the rules are (not public info for some reason) but I think you can reserve dinners only about half of your nights. The employees are all very friendly. The rooms are fairly spacious but the decor is a bit dated.

Service is great, very attentive. Reservation restaurants very nice. I'm not a fan of the "buffet" , but EVERYTHING imaginable is available to eat and the staff never seems to resent you for the priviledge. Lots of loungers on the beach, very few by the pool (which, unfortunately is just too hot), but the sea is lovely. I would love to have a couple small touches like washcloths, but honestly, a very nice place.

The resort itself is really nice, right by the beach with a 24 hour snack bar and pool. Great views and activities, but the gift shop is expensive so bring your own sunscreen and shampoo. Workers and staff are really friendly and interactive. Would recommend checking out the shows at night. The rooms are more or less okay. You get what you pay for. It could have been a bit cleaner. I ended up getting bug bites and coming home with even more bug bites. And the sheets are thin and scratchy. All in all the resort is pretty nice but the hotel could be better.

Also a kids club you can drop your kid(s) off to do activities with their staff (who were excellent with kids).My expectations weren't that high, but I plan on going back as many times as possible. Highly highly recommended!!!

A la Carte restaurant Bamboo served food prepared in advance, probably days in advance or maybe leftovers. It was very very very bad food.

Went here for six days, didn't want to leave! The beach is beautiful, the pool is enjoyable, and the staff is utterly amazing. Overall, I would definitely visit again, and probably will. 😀

Stayed there 2/6/17-2/13/17. Service and employees were great. Bars were great. Beach was incredible. Only 1 mile to 5th Avenue for shopping and to get on ferry to Cozumel. Buffet had great variety and food was average. Went to the Mayan restaurant and that was very good. Wifi was terrible. Could access it in a few spots in the resort and then it was incredibly slow. We started using the hot spot on our phones which was better. (We had to work a fair amount on our computers and not having good internet was a big negative) Rooms weren't as nice as we expected. Beds were the hardest we've ever slept on. Rooms were very musty and gave my wife headaches. First 3 nights we were lucky and didn't have neighbors. 4th night got neighbors and walls were very thin (maybe noisy because of door adjoining rooms). Surprisingly there wasn't a swim-up bar. Were able to walk to their other resort (1/4 mile away) and eat and drink there. We went there one day for lunch. It was much more modern and updated. We went down a hallway and looked at rooms seeing as they were being cleaned and rooms looked much nicer and more modern. It wasn't a bad experience at Azteca, just not as nice as we expected. The next time we go we will stay at the other resort. Again, service was great and we had a blast!!!

This is a smaller place compared to most in this area. What it lacks in size it makes up everywhere else.

Buffet food was above average with a slight twist every day to try to keep one from getting tired of it. The dinner buffet had a different theme every night.

There are about a half a dozen restaurants between this place and it's sister property. One thing that we didn't like was that the a la carte restaurants are only available to guests a specific number of times based off how many nights one is staying. For ex - we stayed 7 nights and were permitted three meals. We were bothered by this because all of the travel sites advertise this as a all-inclusive site, but we ended up enjoying the dinner buffets which off set the restaurant situation.

The staff were all excellent! They treated everyone the same whether they were being tipped or not (at the various bars/restaurants).

The beach was flawless and we never had to worry about finding a spot to sit. The pool was decent for the size of resort. There was a Jacuzzi which was always cold. Otherwise we didn't have any complaints about the pool/beach area.

The Azteca property had many activities throughout the day but was much more quiet than their sister property The Maya; which was more lively and loud.

We are lifetimers at the Azteca! Our first trip to Mexico and Play Del Carmen was amazing and 80% of that is because of the resort.

The Azteca is a smaller resort but that's what made it our choice. It's not as busy and noisy as the bigger resorts like the RIU or the other VIVA Wyndham resorts around. The staff were great and welcomed us the entire time. The bar tenders are friendly and if you treat them well, they will take care of you! I never waited for drinks thanks to Lucio, Roberto and Victor!

The food was amazing. Never got sick once and the selection was great. The buffet everyday was different, and the 3 restaurants were on par with the rest. You can use your wristband to visit the larger sister resort - 5 min walk down the beach to access their 3 restaurants and evening shows as well.

Caesar and the staff who put on the daily activities, fun games and evening shows were great, and love to show you a good time. The resort has a good vibe in the evening and if you're looking to party long into the night the local clubs in Playa are amazing and the hotel staff will take you! 3 clubs in one night with unlimited drinks for 40$US.

The resort is located in Playacar which is an friendly area, very nice, it's clean and safe. It's located within a 10-15 minute walk of 5th Ave and the Cozumel Ferry.

The beach was amazing for swimming, kayaking, sailing and body surfing. It's busy area so if you're looking to surf, scuba dive, or snorkel just head to Cozumel (It's world renown anyways). The swimming areas are marked and if you want to do anything else just talk to any of the guys on the beach.

Great location. Close enough to walk to the buzz of the town and has a sweet beach front. Staff aare great. The resort is smaller than most but it's kind of nice to have less people around.

Great service, ok food. Entertainment staff is excellent. Rooms are spacious and kept clean. Bartenders are prompt and work hard.

This is a wonderful resort. The place is very clean the beach is beautiful and the staff is wondering. I will definitely go back again. One thing dont lose your towels or they will charge $20 which i thought was ridiculous because anyone can take your towel if you leave your area.

24 Stunde Service, der Strand sowie das Wetter super und das im Januar. Ein kleines Hotel aber bietet mehr als manche großen. Mexikaner sind happy und sehr zurückhaltend, Urlauber genießen das was wir hier nicht haben. Ein schönes Land mit vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Comfortable and very family oriented resort. The food was great and the staff was very friendly and ready to help you when you need it. The animation staff were incredible with their shows, my baby enjoyed it a lot (especially the Lion King). The games during the whole day in the pool area and beach made everybody to dance and play. We will come back for sure
