CBH Gretna Hall Hotel

Gretna Loaning, DG16 5DY Gretna Green, United Kingdom Access

CBH Gretna Hall Hotel

Built in 1710 as a manor house on Gretna Estate, Gretna Hall Hotel retains all the character you'd expect from a historic building, but with all of the facilities of a contemporary hotel including free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Gretna Green is famed for being the place that young English couples used to run away to so that they could get married 'over the anvil' without their parents permission. Gretna Hall itself has a 200-year history of marrying couples - they've even named its restaurant after the anvil which sits in Blacksmith's Courtyard. Perhaps upgrade to a sumptuous four poster room set within the oldest part of the building and unwind in a roll-top bath, or take a stroll through the gardens and admire its ornamental ponds - there are 10 perfectly sculpted acres for you to explore - before getting changed for supper at the Anvil restaurant. Browse through the extensive wine list and try a delicious haggis filo parcel to start with (the chef only uses local and seasonal ingredients and is meticulous about how he selects them). Or, if you prefer, you could enjoy a plate of food or a pint of ale in more informal surrounds from the generous menu at the Bar and Lounge instead. Classic British Hotels (CB)

Situated on 10 acres of landscaped gardens within the village of Gretna Green, a 2-minute walk from Gretna Green Rail Station. Edinburgh is less than a 1-hour train journey and the hotel has easy access to the M6/M74.

Loved this hotel from start to finish. We had a smallish double room downstairs with doors leading to a small private terrace area with table and chairs leading to the front gardens. Lovely new en suite too. Staff were all so friendly and helpful, food was delightful. Had a good look around the relaxing gardens and marriage rooms. What's not to love. Booked up for next year now. Can't wait!!

The setting for the hotel is beautiful as is the surrounding area with the famous blacksmiths shop a short walk away. The room was ok. I couldn't get the shower to work. The bar and lounge was nice and the food was ok as well.

Food wasn't great. Rooms were small. A faint odour of turps everywhere.
Our room wasn't very clean when we checked in, there was hair in the plug hole.
And when are UK hotels going to understand that air con is a viable thing in the UK now and that some guests may want it.
It was quaint enough but so obviously caters to two specific groups of clientele. The wedding party and the coach party.
The staff are efficient and friendly and the breakfast was actually alright.

Our room was small, dirty (stains on the wall and on the carpet) taps were impossible for my partner to turn on, not enough storage in room. Lovely location. Lovely public areas. Food was amazing (breakfast and Evening meal) all in all not worth the £110 we paid a night.

Did not stay here, but did get married in the Cottage wedding venue.
Had a great evening meal also.
If you want to do the 'run away to Gretna' style wedding, consider staying at this hotel

Our daughter and partner married there a couple of weeks ago. Our room was lovely and view over the gardens at the front were nice too. Two of the other rooms (one at the back overlooking a bit of a mess)were very nice but our daughter and partners room was very dingy and dull. I asked her to change with us but she said no. Perhaps a little more thought could go into the planning of future arrangements of rooms that will go to the couple who are about to wed. Having said that our time there was good and staff very pleasant.

Very clean and tidy bedrooms although there are some areas that need a little bit more sprucing up. Slept really well and the room I had was quiet which was lovely. Food was really good, buffet for breakfast; which was adequate but disappointing that as being in Scotland, there was not the choice of porage! Would come again without a doubt!

My now husband and myself were married here in March and while the ceremony and the food was good, the room was shocking. Very much out of date, not very clean and a bathroom which was clearly for disabled use. The dead flies in all the light shades were utterly disgusting! Of course we filled out the feedback card in our room and handed it to reception on checkout but we've not even had so much as an apology. We were told the card would be passed on to whoever deals with complaints so its either been ignored or not passed on at all. £650 we paid because it was a week day, it's higher at the weekend and if you have guests etc. It's definitely not worth it! Oh and that didn't included a meal, breakfast only.

Only had a drink at the bar. Room was clean and comfortable. The building is undergoing renovation work which causes sobe noise but we understand that this is necessary and it is clearly noted throughout the building.

7

Room was OK, the TV reception was pretty dreadful and the shower was no better than a hot dripping tap. However, the evening meal was fab. I had a rib-eye steak that was really well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Also, the breakfast spread was superb. As good as any 5 star hotel. You can make up for any shortfall in my book by serving up a great breakfast.

Me and my wife got married here a few years ago and we came back to visit. Excellent staff and the grounds are great for photo opportunities. Sitting in the bar in front of the fire when it's freezing outside is a great plus here. The normal accommodation is simple but comfortable.

Food at the Gretna Hotel is tasty and very well cooked. The breakfast gives a good selection too. Very nice food.
The actual rooms are quite basic and need some work doing.
Staff are very friendly.
Need a car as there isn't much around.
